Dana 24. veljače, kada je Rusija započela invaziju na Ukrajinu, društvenim mrežama se počela širiti slika ruskog pjesnika Puškina, broj sedam i redovi emotikona "osobE koja hoda". Za one koji su znali, značenje je bilo jasno - lokacija (Puškinov trg, u Moskvi), vrijeme i poziv na prosvjed protiv vladinih postupaka. Emoji se pozivaju na šifru koja se godinama koristi u Rusiji za upućivanje na prosvjede - toliko dobro poznata vlastima da je to jedva šifra, prema skupini za ljudska prava OVD-Info.

Neovlašteni prosvjedi zabranjeni su u zemlji od 2014. godine, a kršenje pravila može dovesti do pritvora od 15 dana za prvo kazneno djelo. Ponovni počinitelji mogu dobiti zatvorsku kaznu do pet godina. Od tada je uobičajeno da aktivisti koriste razne šifrirane fraze za organiziranje na internetu.

Dana 24. veljače, kada je Rusija započela invaziju na Ukrajinu, društvenim mrežama se počela širiti slika ruskog pjesnika Puškina, broj sedam i redovi emotikona "osobE koja hoda". Za one koji su znali, značenje je bilo jasno - lokacija (Puškinov trg, u Moskvi), vrijeme i poziv na prosvjed protiv vladinih postupaka. Emoji se pozivaju na šifru koja se godinama koristi u Rusiji za upućivanje na prosvjede - toliko dobro poznata vlastima da je to jedva šifra, prema skupini za ljudska prava OVD-Info.

Neovlašteni prosvjedi zabranjeni su u zemlji od 2014. godine, a kršenje pravila može dovesti do pritvora od 15 dana za prvo kazneno djelo. Ponovni počinitelji mogu dobiti zatvorsku kaznu do pet godina. Od tada je uobičajeno da aktivisti koriste razne šifrirane fraze za organiziranje na internetu.

"To je kao: 'Idemo prošetati do centra' ili 'Vrijeme je super za šetnju'", kaže Maria. Ovo će poslati svojim prijateljima kako bi ih obavijestila da planira prisustvovati prosvjedu. Ono što je počelo kao način izbjegavanja vladinih cenzora gotovo je postalo unutarnja šala ili meme, kaže Maria za BBC News.

Ipak, posljedice nekorištenja ovog jezika mogu biti ozbiljne. Alexander je prisustvovao prosvjedu u Moskvi, nakon što je o tome objavio na društvenim mrežama. Sljedećeg jutra, policajci u civilu pokupili su ga ispred zgrade njegove djevojke i odveli u lokalnu policijsku upravu. Bio je nekoliko dana u pritvoru i prisiljen potpisati dokument u kojemu se navodi što su vlasti rekle da je učinio. 

BBC News je saznao za druga pritvaranja temeljena isključivo na aktivnostima na društvenim medijima, uključujući jednu ženu uhićenu zbog tweeta. Dana 24. veljače objavila je: "Dugo nisam hodala centrom", i citirala tweet drugog računa koji je sadržavao eksplicitniji poziv na okupljanje. Pet dana kasnije uhićena je dok se vozila vlakom. Vjeruje da ju je otkrio softver za prepoznavanje lica koji je aktivan u sustavu moskovskog metroa - a na njezinom sudskom ročištu predstavljen je dokument koji je sadržavao njezin tweet, koji pokazuje da su vlasti napravile snimku zaslona gotovo odmah nakon što ga je objavila.

U drugom slučaju, Niki, bloger, opisao je kako je brat bliskog prijatelja priveden dva puta - jednom na nekoliko sati nakon što je prisustvovao prosvjedu i drugi put, cijeli tjedan, jer je podijelio detalje sa svojim prijateljima na VK, ruskom ekvivalentu Facebooka.

Gotovo 14.000 ljudi privedeno je diljem Rusije otkako je sukob počeo prije dva tjedna, uglavnom zbog sudjelovanja na prosvjedima, tvrdi OVD-Info koji pruža pravne savjete. I postoje jasne naznake da su se uhićenja povećala otkako je uveden novi zakon, kaže OVD-Info. Zatvaranje nezavisnih medija, blokiranje Facebooka i ograničenja Rusima koji objavljuju na TikToku oduzeli su ključne rute za pristup informacijama, kaže koordinator OVD-Info Leonid Drabkin, a ljudi će se sada samocenzurirati iz straha.
