Osnivači BioNTecha Özlem Türeci i Ugur Sahin dali su veliki intervju za Deutsche Welle u kojem su najviše govorili o pandemiji koronavirusa i cijepljenju.

Kažu da nisu razočarani što nisu dobili Nobelovu nagradu za medicinu. “Mi svakodnevno dobijemo pregršt Nobelovih nagrada”, kazali su u velikom intervjuu za Deutsche Welle.

Gospođo Türeci, gospodine Sahin, nedavno ste u Solunu dobili nagradu Carice Teofanije, koja se dodjeljuje za izuzetne doprinose Europi. Što vam znači ta nagrada?

Ugur Sahin: To je nagrada koja predstavlja europsku kulturu. Nagrada koja se dodjeljuje u gradu iz kojeg potječe naš prijatelj i partner Albert Bourla, šef Uprave Pfizera. A nagradu smo dobili u trenutku kada ponovno možemo putovati. Jer, zbog mnogih ograničenja to u posljednje vrijeme skoro da i nismo činili.

Korona – ključna riječ. Kako će se stvari dalje razvijati? Kada će pandemija završiti?

Türeci: To je teško pitanje, s obzirom na to da svakodnevno učimo nešto novo o virusu, o tome kako reagira na cjepivo. Ova saznanja su nam potrebna kako bismo mogli procijeniti kada će pandemija završiti. Ali, ono što već sada sa sigurnošću možemo reći je da će postupno doći do nove normalnosti.

To se već sada osjeća. Učimo kako se odnositi prema virusu. Mnogi od nas su već cijepljeni i stekli su novi stupanj slobode. Doći će do nove normalnosti u kojoj će se na temelju imuniteta većina stanovništva moći slobodnije ponašati. Sigurno ćemo se još nekoliko godina nositi na neki način s virusom.

Pronaći će se i odgovori na pitanja koje danas nemamo. Budućnost će pokazati hoće li se pojaviti nove varijante virusa, koji će biti otporne na postojeća cjepiva, i hoće li se morati izvršiti prilagođavanje cijepljenja.

S godinama će virus dobiti status koji danas ima virus gripe, protiv kojeg se svake godine ili svake druge godine mogu cijepiti određeni dijelovi stanovništva, a drugi ne moraju. Korona će postati virusno oboljenje koje se može kontrolirati.

Radite li na novom cjepivu, na novoj generaciji vašeg cjepiva protiv novih mutacija virusa?

Sahin: Da, trenutno testiramo varijante cjepiva na relativno malom broju dragovoljaca. Studija o južnoafričkoj beta-varijanti je skoro gotova, još jedna o delta-varijanti je u tijeku, prvenstveno radi prikupljanja podataka. Trenutno nema potrebe za zamjenom vakcine.

Ali, želimo pokazati da možemo proizvesti i klinički testirati nove varijante cjepiva, i da su ona podjednako sigurna kao i cjepiva koja trenutno imamo. Ako se idućih godina pojavi neka varijanta za koju se cjepivo mora prilagoditi, mogli bi to onda vrlo brzo uraditi s obzirom na činjenicu da smo već etablirali odgovarajuće procese.

Moći ćemo se dakle bez većih uzbuđenja pripremiti na to da će se cjepivo pod određenim okolnostima morati svake dvije godine prilagođavati novim mutacijama virusa.

Treba li cijepiti i djecu?

Sahin: Mi ne možemo reći je li to nužno ili ne. Mi generiramo podatke i te podatke dostavljamo nadležnim službama. Vakcine za djecu od 12 do 15 godina su već odobrene.

Türeci: Podatke o djeci starosne dobi između pet i osam godina smo predali prije četiri tjedna nadležnim službama, a to bi se moralo analizirati u cjelokupnom kontekstu javnog zdravstva. To radi svaka nacija i svaka vlada za sebe. Mi na to ne utječemo. Do konca godine ćemo predati podatke i za još mlađu djecu, od šest mjeseci do četiri godine. Te studije su u tijeku.

Sahin: Jako je važno da postoji ponuda. Kada su cjepiva odobrena, onda svatko za sebe može odlučiti želi li to iskoristiti ili ne.

Jeste li razočarani činjenicom da i nakon toliko istraživanja još uvijek ima ljudi koji odbijaju primiti cjepivo? Ili imate razumijevanja za to?

Sahin: Možemo to shvatiti i uopće nismo razočarani. Ono što mi s naše strane radimo je da transparentno pružamo informacije. Po meni je dobro i to što stručnjaci o tome govore u medijima.

Tako svatko ima mogućnost shvatiti ovu situaciju. Jedino što svakome savjetujem je da ne koristi samo jednostrane informacije, već da se informira što je moguće šire. Tako možete onda i sami donijeti dobru odluku.

Imate li razumijevanja za to kada ljudi kažu da se radi o novoj tehnologiji, i da se ne zna kakve sve dugoročne posljedice može imati?

Sahin: Razumijemo i to. No, s druge strane cjepivo se podnosi jako, jako dobro što spada u najvažnija dostignuća čovječanstva. Bez cjepiva se naše društvo ne bi moglo tako dobro razviti, kao što je to slučaj danas. I činjenica je da se naše cjepivo temelji na novoj tehnologiji, ali je to tehnologija koju smo dobro upoznali, jer ona postoji već 30 godina.

Naše cjepivo nije nastalo tek tako, već je utemeljeno na biomolekulama koje se nalaze u svakoj stanici u našem tijelu. Ne donosimo ništa novo i imamo vrlo dobru znanstvenu bazu, s obzirom na to da se u ova istraživanja ulaže već više od 30 godina. Zbog toga je naše cjepivo moglo tako brzo i biti razvijeno.

Mnogi su bili sigurni da ćete upravo vi za vaše revolucionarno otkriće ove godine dobiti Nobelovu nagradu za medicinu. Jeste li razočarani da je niste dobili?

Sahin: Vjerujem da se ne može biti razočaran ako niste dobili nešto što je tako rijetko poput Nobelove nagrade.

Türeci: Velika nagrada koju smo dobili je ta što su stotine milijuna ljudi cijepljeni onim na čemu smo dugo radili i što primamo e-mailove mnogih ljudi koji se zahvaljuju i šalju nam fotografije sa svojim bakama, koje konačno smiju posjetiti. To su mase Nobelovih nagrada, koje dobijemo svakodnevno, i koje su nam vrlo važne.

Vlade širom svijeta žele motivirati još više ljudi da se cijepe. Mogu li učiniti doista još više?

Türeci: Sve vlade se trude potaknuti ljude na vakcinaciju i razvile su pametne i zanimljive načine. Također bi se trebali ugledati i učiti jedni od drugih. Gradonačelnica Kölna nam je jednom ispričala da ponekad i sama ode u dijelove grada u kojima se nudi cjepivo. Na to bi se mogli ugledati i drugi predstavnici vlasti.

Osnivači BioNTecha Özlem Türeci i Ugur Sahin dali su veliki intervju za Deutsche Welle u kojem su najviše govorili o pandemiji koronavirusa i cijepljenju.

Kažu da nisu razočarani što nisu dobili Nobelovu nagradu za medicinu. “Mi svakodnevno dobijemo pregršt Nobelovih nagrada”, kazali su u velikom intervjuu za Deutsche Welle.

Gospođo Türeci, gospodine Sahin, nedavno ste u Solunu dobili nagradu Carice Teofanije, koja se dodjeljuje za izuzetne doprinose Europi. Što vam znači ta nagrada?

Ugur Sahin: To je nagrada koja predstavlja europsku kulturu. Nagrada koja se dodjeljuje u gradu iz kojeg potječe naš prijatelj i partner Albert Bourla, šef Uprave Pfizera. A nagradu smo dobili u trenutku kada ponovno možemo putovati. Jer, zbog mnogih ograničenja to u posljednje vrijeme skoro da i nismo činili.

Korona – ključna riječ. Kako će se stvari dalje razvijati? Kada će pandemija završiti?

Türeci: To je teško pitanje, s obzirom na to da svakodnevno učimo nešto novo o virusu, o tome kako reagira na cjepivo. Ova saznanja su nam potrebna kako bismo mogli procijeniti kada će pandemija završiti. Ali, ono što već sada sa sigurnošću možemo reći je da će postupno doći do nove normalnosti.

To se već sada osjeća. Učimo kako se odnositi prema virusu. Mnogi od nas su već cijepljeni i stekli su novi stupanj slobode. Doći će do nove normalnosti u kojoj će se na temelju imuniteta većina stanovništva moći slobodnije ponašati. Sigurno ćemo se još nekoliko godina nositi na neki način s virusom.

Pronaći će se i odgovori na pitanja koje danas nemamo. Budućnost će pokazati hoće li se pojaviti nove varijante virusa, koji će biti otporne na postojeća cjepiva, i hoće li se morati izvršiti prilagođavanje cijepljenja.

S godinama će virus dobiti status koji danas ima virus gripe, protiv kojeg se svake godine ili svake druge godine mogu cijepiti određeni dijelovi stanovništva, a drugi ne moraju. Korona će postati virusno oboljenje koje se može kontrolirati.

Radite li na novom cjepivu, na novoj generaciji vašeg cjepiva protiv novih mutacija virusa?

Sahin: Da, trenutno testiramo varijante cjepiva na relativno malom broju dragovoljaca. Studija o južnoafričkoj beta-varijanti je skoro gotova, još jedna o delta-varijanti je u tijeku, prvenstveno radi prikupljanja podataka. Trenutno nema potrebe za zamjenom vakcine.

Ali, želimo pokazati da možemo proizvesti i klinički testirati nove varijante cjepiva, i da su ona podjednako sigurna kao i cjepiva koja trenutno imamo. Ako se idućih godina pojavi neka varijanta za koju se cjepivo mora prilagoditi, mogli bi to onda vrlo brzo uraditi s obzirom na činjenicu da smo već etablirali odgovarajuće procese.

Moći ćemo se dakle bez većih uzbuđenja pripremiti na to da će se cjepivo pod određenim okolnostima morati svake dvije godine prilagođavati novim mutacijama virusa.

Treba li cijepiti i djecu?

Sahin: Mi ne možemo reći je li to nužno ili ne. Mi generiramo podatke i te podatke dostavljamo nadležnim službama. Vakcine za djecu od 12 do 15 godina su već odobrene.

Türeci: Podatke o djeci starosne dobi između pet i osam godina smo predali prije četiri tjedna nadležnim službama, a to bi se moralo analizirati u cjelokupnom kontekstu javnog zdravstva. To radi svaka nacija i svaka vlada za sebe. Mi na to ne utječemo. Do konca godine ćemo predati podatke i za još mlađu djecu, od šest mjeseci do četiri godine. Te studije su u tijeku.

Sahin: Jako je važno da postoji ponuda. Kada su cjepiva odobrena, onda svatko za sebe može odlučiti želi li to iskoristiti ili ne.

Jeste li razočarani činjenicom da i nakon toliko istraživanja još uvijek ima ljudi koji odbijaju primiti cjepivo? Ili imate razumijevanja za to?

Sahin: Možemo to shvatiti i uopće nismo razočarani. Ono što mi s naše strane radimo je da transparentno pružamo informacije. Po meni je dobro i to što stručnjaci o tome govore u medijima.

Tako svatko ima mogućnost shvatiti ovu situaciju. Jedino što svakome savjetujem je da ne koristi samo jednostrane informacije, već da se informira što je moguće šire. Tako možete onda i sami donijeti dobru odluku.

Imate li razumijevanja za to kada ljudi kažu da se radi o novoj tehnologiji, i da se ne zna kakve sve dugoročne posljedice može imati?

Sahin: Razumijemo i to. No, s druge strane cjepivo se podnosi jako, jako dobro što spada u najvažnija dostignuća čovječanstva. Bez cjepiva se naše društvo ne bi moglo tako dobro razviti, kao što je to slučaj danas. I činjenica je da se naše cjepivo temelji na novoj tehnologiji, ali je to tehnologija koju smo dobro upoznali, jer ona postoji već 30 godina.

Naše cjepivo nije nastalo tek tako, već je utemeljeno na biomolekulama koje se nalaze u svakoj stanici u našem tijelu. Ne donosimo ništa novo i imamo vrlo dobru znanstvenu bazu, s obzirom na to da se u ova istraživanja ulaže već više od 30 godina. Zbog toga je naše cjepivo moglo tako brzo i biti razvijeno.

Mnogi su bili sigurni da ćete upravo vi za vaše revolucionarno otkriće ove godine dobiti Nobelovu nagradu za medicinu. Jeste li razočarani da je niste dobili?

Sahin: Vjerujem da se ne može biti razočaran ako niste dobili nešto što je tako rijetko poput Nobelove nagrade.

Türeci: Velika nagrada koju smo dobili je ta što su stotine milijuna ljudi cijepljeni onim na čemu smo dugo radili i što primamo e-mailove mnogih ljudi koji se zahvaljuju i šalju nam fotografije sa svojim bakama, koje konačno smiju posjetiti. To su mase Nobelovih nagrada, koje dobijemo svakodnevno, i koje su nam vrlo važne.

Vlade širom svijeta žele motivirati još više ljudi da se cijepe. Mogu li učiniti doista još više?

Türeci: Sve vlade se trude potaknuti ljude na vakcinaciju i razvile su pametne i zanimljive načine. Također bi se trebali ugledati i učiti jedni od drugih. Gradonačelnica Kölna nam je jednom ispričala da ponekad i sama ode u dijelove grada u kojima se nudi cjepivo. Na to bi se mogli ugledati i drugi predstavnici vlasti.
