Britanac Paul Templer imao je 28 godina i radio kao turistički vodič u Zimbabveu kada je preživio svoju verziju bajke o Crvenkapici i vuku. Samo što je on bio Crvenkapica ili baka, a nilski konj vuk – koji je progutao svoju žrtvu.
Templer je bio zaljubljen u divljinu, biljni i životinjski svijet, kako kaže – sve u vezi Zimbabvea. Ističe da je živio život kakav je samo mogao sanjati sve do 9. ožujka 1996. godine.
Tog dana je saznao da kolega koji vodi vožnju kajakom niz rijeku Zambezi ima malariju, a Templer je pristao preuzeti njegovu grupu.
“Obožavam taj dio rijeke, poznajem kraj kao svoj dlan”, ispričao je Paul Templer za CNN Travel.
Prisjeća se da je u grupi bilo desetoro ljudi, među kojima i on, podijeljeni u nekoliko kajaka.
Tijekom spusta niz Zambezi na sigurnoj su udaljenosti prošli kraj desetine nilskih konja, uobičajenih stanovnika četvrte najveće afričke rijeke. Međutim, neplanirano se dogodilo da se jedan kajak odvoji od grupe i približi nilskom konju. Ova vodena grdosija katapultirala je kajak i jednog njegovog člana, što je pokrenulo kaos na rijeci.
Muškarca koji je upao u rijeku, struja je nosila na najgoru moguću stranu – prema mami nilskog konja i njenom mladunčetu.
“Znao sam da ga moram brzo izvući. Veslao sam prema njemu, približavao se, kada sam vidio ogroman val koji dolazi prema meni. Ako ste ikada gledali one stare filmove u kojima se torpedo približava brodu – to je bilo tako. Znao sam da je u pitanju ili nilski konj ili ogroman krokodil”, prisjetio se Templer za CNN.
Dodaje da je u trenutku kada je pružio ruku čovjeku u rijeci, voda između njih eruptirala i nastao je – mrak. Ono što je uslijedilo bilo je noćna mora i nadrealno, kaže sugovornik CNN-a.
“Odjednom je sve bilo mračno i neobično tiho. Od struka nadole mogao sam osjetiti vodu. Mogao sam osjetiti da sam mokar i u rijeci. Od struka nagore bilo je drugačije. Bilo je toplo, nije bilo mokro kao da sam u rijeci, ali nije bilo ni suho. I osjećao sam strašan pritisak na donji dio leđa. Pokušao sam se okrenuti, ali nisam uspio”, ispričao je Britanac dodajući da mu je trebalo nekoliko sekundi da shvati gdje se nalazi i što mu se dogodilo.
“Shvatio sam da se do struka nalazim u ustima nilskog konja”, ispričao je Templer.

Imajući u vidu da nilski konj može narasti do pet metara u dužinu, 1,6 metara u visinu i da može biti težak do četiri tone, ne čudi to da odrasla osoba može stati u njegova usta i grlo. Usta može otvoriti pod kutom do 150 stupnjeva, a najstrašnija stvar su zubi čiji oštri očnjaci mogu biti dugački do pola metra.
Ugriz nilskog konja je tri puta snažniji od ugriza lava, tako da ova životinja u jednom potezu može prepoloviti ljudsko tijelo.
Pitanje je onda kako je Paul Templer preživio. Može se reći da je u pitanju sreća u nesreći, odnosno zapeo je nilskom konju u grlu pa ga je ovaj ispljunuo.
“Tako sam udario o površinu vode, udahnuo svjež zrak i nastavio plivati”, ispričao je vodič, prenosi N1.
I dok je pokušavao doplivati do čovjeka kojeg je krenuo spašavati, ponovno je osjetio pritisak. Ovaj put noge su mu bile zarobljene u ustima nilskog konja, a ruke slobodne. Međutim, i drugi put je ispljunut.
Treći put je bio i najgori. Nilski konj je izronio iz vode i uhvatio ga bočno, zaranjajući svako malo pod vodu kako bi onesposobio svoju žrtvu. Ovaj put Templer ne bi preživio da se nije pojavio jedan od vodiča u kajaku i uspio ga spasiti, riskirajući vlastiti život.
Epilog “lošeg dana na poslu” bile su višestruke ozljede ruku i nogu te probijena pluća. U idućih nekoliko mjeseci uslijedilo je više ozbiljnih operacija, a liječnici u jednom trenutku nisu bili sigurni hoće li mu spasiti ruke i noge. Jednu ruku su, ipak, morali amputirati.
Tijelo muškarca kojeg je pokušavao spasiti pronađeno je tri dana kasnije. Na sebi nije imao tragove napada životinja pa se vjeruje da se utopio.
Poslije svega što mu se dogodilo, ovaj bivši safari vodič kaže da nilski konji nisu previše opasni za ljude – ako ih ostavite na miru i oni će vas.
“Oni ne love ljude. Ne približavajte im se. Ne vole kada ih uznemiravaju, a po prirodi nisu predatori. Ne približavajte se njihovim stazama, a ako ih baš želite vidjeti, uzmite dalekozor. Kada vam vodič kaže da ostanete u vozilu – ostanite u vozilu”, objasnio je vodič.

Britanac Paul Templer imao je 28 godina i radio kao turistički vodič u Zimbabveu kada je preživio svoju verziju bajke o Crvenkapici i vuku. Samo što je on bio Crvenkapica ili baka, a nilski konj vuk – koji je progutao svoju žrtvu.
Templer je bio zaljubljen u divljinu, biljni i životinjski svijet, kako kaže – sve u vezi Zimbabvea. Ističe da je živio život kakav je samo mogao sanjati sve do 9. ožujka 1996. godine.
Tog dana je saznao da kolega koji vodi vožnju kajakom niz rijeku Zambezi ima malariju, a Templer je pristao preuzeti njegovu grupu.
“Obožavam taj dio rijeke, poznajem kraj kao svoj dlan”, ispričao je Paul Templer za CNN Travel.
Prisjeća se da je u grupi bilo desetoro ljudi, među kojima i on, podijeljeni u nekoliko kajaka.
Tijekom spusta niz Zambezi na sigurnoj su udaljenosti prošli kraj desetine nilskih konja, uobičajenih stanovnika četvrte najveće afričke rijeke. Međutim, neplanirano se dogodilo da se jedan kajak odvoji od grupe i približi nilskom konju. Ova vodena grdosija katapultirala je kajak i jednog njegovog člana, što je pokrenulo kaos na rijeci.
Muškarca koji je upao u rijeku, struja je nosila na najgoru moguću stranu – prema mami nilskog konja i njenom mladunčetu.
“Znao sam da ga moram brzo izvući. Veslao sam prema njemu, približavao se, kada sam vidio ogroman val koji dolazi prema meni. Ako ste ikada gledali one stare filmove u kojima se torpedo približava brodu – to je bilo tako. Znao sam da je u pitanju ili nilski konj ili ogroman krokodil”, prisjetio se Templer za CNN.
Dodaje da je u trenutku kada je pružio ruku čovjeku u rijeci, voda između njih eruptirala i nastao je – mrak. Ono što je uslijedilo bilo je noćna mora i nadrealno, kaže sugovornik CNN-a.
“Odjednom je sve bilo mračno i neobično tiho. Od struka nadole mogao sam osjetiti vodu. Mogao sam osjetiti da sam mokar i u rijeci. Od struka nagore bilo je drugačije. Bilo je toplo, nije bilo mokro kao da sam u rijeci, ali nije bilo ni suho. I osjećao sam strašan pritisak na donji dio leđa. Pokušao sam se okrenuti, ali nisam uspio”, ispričao je Britanac dodajući da mu je trebalo nekoliko sekundi da shvati gdje se nalazi i što mu se dogodilo.
“Shvatio sam da se do struka nalazim u ustima nilskog konja”, ispričao je Templer.

Imajući u vidu da nilski konj može narasti do pet metara u dužinu, 1,6 metara u visinu i da može biti težak do četiri tone, ne čudi to da odrasla osoba može stati u njegova usta i grlo. Usta može otvoriti pod kutom do 150 stupnjeva, a najstrašnija stvar su zubi čiji oštri očnjaci mogu biti dugački do pola metra.
Ugriz nilskog konja je tri puta snažniji od ugriza lava, tako da ova životinja u jednom potezu može prepoloviti ljudsko tijelo.
Pitanje je onda kako je Paul Templer preživio. Može se reći da je u pitanju sreća u nesreći, odnosno zapeo je nilskom konju u grlu pa ga je ovaj ispljunuo.
“Tako sam udario o površinu vode, udahnuo svjež zrak i nastavio plivati”, ispričao je vodič, prenosi N1.
I dok je pokušavao doplivati do čovjeka kojeg je krenuo spašavati, ponovno je osjetio pritisak. Ovaj put noge su mu bile zarobljene u ustima nilskog konja, a ruke slobodne. Međutim, i drugi put je ispljunut.
Treći put je bio i najgori. Nilski konj je izronio iz vode i uhvatio ga bočno, zaranjajući svako malo pod vodu kako bi onesposobio svoju žrtvu. Ovaj put Templer ne bi preživio da se nije pojavio jedan od vodiča u kajaku i uspio ga spasiti, riskirajući vlastiti život.
Epilog “lošeg dana na poslu” bile su višestruke ozljede ruku i nogu te probijena pluća. U idućih nekoliko mjeseci uslijedilo je više ozbiljnih operacija, a liječnici u jednom trenutku nisu bili sigurni hoće li mu spasiti ruke i noge. Jednu ruku su, ipak, morali amputirati.
Tijelo muškarca kojeg je pokušavao spasiti pronađeno je tri dana kasnije. Na sebi nije imao tragove napada životinja pa se vjeruje da se utopio.
Poslije svega što mu se dogodilo, ovaj bivši safari vodič kaže da nilski konji nisu previše opasni za ljude – ako ih ostavite na miru i oni će vas.
“Oni ne love ljude. Ne približavajte im se. Ne vole kada ih uznemiravaju, a po prirodi nisu predatori. Ne približavajte se njihovim stazama, a ako ih baš želite vidjeti, uzmite dalekozor. Kada vam vodič kaže da ostanete u vozilu – ostanite u vozilu”, objasnio je vodič.
