Najavljivana na sva zvona i predstavljena kao nešto što će donijeti tenisku revoluciju, suradnja Svjetske teniske federacije (ITF) i tvrtke Kosmos na stvaranju “nove ere Davis Cupa” raspala se nakon samo četiri godine.
Davidu Haggertyju, predsjedniku ITF-a, bila su puna usta Kosmosa kada je 2018. trebalo braniti, odnosno usvojiti predloženi novi format natjecanja, a koji je inicirao Kosmos. A inicirala su ga zapravo obećanja o financijskim nagradama jer je Kosmos, kompanija koju je osnovao i vodi je Gerard Pique, donedavni nogometaš Barcelone i španjolske reprezentacije, tvrdio da će u sljedećih 25 godina uložiti tri (3) milijarde dolara u Davis Cup. Ako zauzvrat dobije prava na vođenje natjecanja načinom na koji želi, pišu Sportske novosti.
Kada je Pique i njegova ekipa zamahnula takvom svotom pred očima ITF-a, Haggertyju nije bilo teško prihvatiti ponuđeno. Iako se predložena reforma činila prilično kontroverznom te iako je naišla na otpor nekih od najvećih teniskih nacija, poput Velike Britanije, Australije i Njemačke, glas novca bio je jači.

Sada se, međutim, čini kako je to o 3 milijarde bila samo pusta priča, koja je završila kao ispuhani balon. Jer prema pisanju uglednog L’Equipea, Kosmos je protjeran iz razloga što nije mogao izvršiti svoje financijske obaveze. Problemi traju, navodno, neko vrijeme, te je Kosmos već prije nekoliko mjeseci tražio od ITF-a produženje roka za plaćanje 6 milijuna dolara, koje su dugovali od prije.
Štoviše, Piqueova kompanija navodno nije bila u stanju isplatiti ni obećani nagradni fond za osam reprezentacija koje su sudjelovale na završnici u Malagi prije dva mjeseca. Zbog toga je ostalo na ITF-u da pokrije sva plaćanja reprezentacijama, među kojima je bila i Hrvatska koja je stigla do polufinala i time je prema tablici diobe nagradnog fonda HTS trebao dobiti 663 tisuće dolara, a igrači međusobno razdijeliti 1,34 millijun dolara. Ako su HTS i naši tenisači dobili spomenuti iznos, onda je to došlo iz džepa ITF-a, ne od Kosmosa.
Službeno je, pak, nagradni fond Davis Cupa iznosio 15,3 milijuna dolara.
Španjolski dnevnik Marca, pak, spominje kako je ITF tražio od Kosmosa isplatu od 40 milijuna dolara, kao proviziju (i valjda garanciju) kako bi stvari i u 2023. išle dalje kako je dogovoreno. S time da bi se ta provizija trebala u 2024. još malo i povećati.
Međutim, Kosmos je očito posve zaglibio jer unatoč tome što su se prihodi od posljednjeg izdanja Davis Cupa povećali, to nije bilo dovoljno da pokrije minuse nastale u izuzetno lošim početnim godinama “nove ere”. L’Equipe spominje gubitke od nekoliko desetaka milijuna eura. I zato ITF nije imao izbora nego jednostavno isključiti Kosmos...pišu Sportske novosti
- ITF je kao skrbnik povijesnog natjecanja osigurao da su financijske obaveze ispunjene, a natjecanje će se u 2023. odvijati prema već utvrđenom rasporedu, pa će se tako i Final 8 turnir održati u Malagi u studenom. Pri svemu tome, fokusirani smo na daljnji razvoj i rast Davis Cupa.

Na poticaj Kosmosa i Piquea, a pod parolom “modernizacije Davis Cupa”, srušena je više od stoljeća stara tradicija i sustav odigravanja mečeva. Ukinuli su kup-sustav natjecanja s igranjem klasičnih dvoboja i domaćinstva kod jedne od reprezentacija; ukinuli su igranje na tri dobivena seta; ukinuli su (maksimalno) četiri dvoboja u različitim terminima kroz godinu jer su htjeli staviti sve nagurati u jedan tjedan i na isto mjesto.
Iza svega se krila želja da, zapravo, natjecanje koncipiraju po uzoru na nogometno SP ili košarkaško ili rukometno. Dakle, da na jednom mjestu okupe 18 najboljih reprezentacija koje će prvo igrati po skupinama pa onda nokaut sustavom do konačnog pobjednika. I sve to u samo sedam do deset dana krajem studenog.
Prvo izdanje u Madridu 2019. godine bilo je debakl zbog praznih dvorana na skoro svim mečevima, osim kada je igrala Španjolska. Spominjala se ideja da se Davis Cup “proda” Abu Dhabiju, odnosno da se tamo održi finalni turnir. Nije se dogodilo, ali je sustav natjecanja nanovo promijenjen, pa podijeljen na grupnu fazu (s domaćinima u četiri europska grada) i završnicu u Španjolskoj u dva termina, rujan i studeni.
Kako god, sveukupno se ovaj eksperiment nije pokazao uspješnim. Niti se povećao broj gledatelja, niti se dobio veći spektakl, niti se tenisačima otvorilo puno više slobodnih tjedana u kalendaru, niti je privukao sve najbolje tenisače svijeta na sudjelovanje, a to su bile prokazivane kao glavne boljke starog sustava.
Novi ih nije ispravio, pri tome je i imidž još malo nagrđen, a ITF će morati tražiti i novog partnera. Hoće li to i na koji način uvjetovati nove promjene sustava natjecanja, ostaje za vidjeti. Sigurno je samo da je Pique prošlost...

Najavljivana na sva zvona i predstavljena kao nešto što će donijeti tenisku revoluciju, suradnja Svjetske teniske federacije (ITF) i tvrtke Kosmos na stvaranju “nove ere Davis Cupa” raspala se nakon samo četiri godine.
Davidu Haggertyju, predsjedniku ITF-a, bila su puna usta Kosmosa kada je 2018. trebalo braniti, odnosno usvojiti predloženi novi format natjecanja, a koji je inicirao Kosmos. A inicirala su ga zapravo obećanja o financijskim nagradama jer je Kosmos, kompanija koju je osnovao i vodi je Gerard Pique, donedavni nogometaš Barcelone i španjolske reprezentacije, tvrdio da će u sljedećih 25 godina uložiti tri (3) milijarde dolara u Davis Cup. Ako zauzvrat dobije prava na vođenje natjecanja načinom na koji želi, pišu Sportske novosti.
Kada je Pique i njegova ekipa zamahnula takvom svotom pred očima ITF-a, Haggertyju nije bilo teško prihvatiti ponuđeno. Iako se predložena reforma činila prilično kontroverznom te iako je naišla na otpor nekih od najvećih teniskih nacija, poput Velike Britanije, Australije i Njemačke, glas novca bio je jači.

Sada se, međutim, čini kako je to o 3 milijarde bila samo pusta priča, koja je završila kao ispuhani balon. Jer prema pisanju uglednog L’Equipea, Kosmos je protjeran iz razloga što nije mogao izvršiti svoje financijske obaveze. Problemi traju, navodno, neko vrijeme, te je Kosmos već prije nekoliko mjeseci tražio od ITF-a produženje roka za plaćanje 6 milijuna dolara, koje su dugovali od prije.
Štoviše, Piqueova kompanija navodno nije bila u stanju isplatiti ni obećani nagradni fond za osam reprezentacija koje su sudjelovale na završnici u Malagi prije dva mjeseca. Zbog toga je ostalo na ITF-u da pokrije sva plaćanja reprezentacijama, među kojima je bila i Hrvatska koja je stigla do polufinala i time je prema tablici diobe nagradnog fonda HTS trebao dobiti 663 tisuće dolara, a igrači međusobno razdijeliti 1,34 millijun dolara. Ako su HTS i naši tenisači dobili spomenuti iznos, onda je to došlo iz džepa ITF-a, ne od Kosmosa.
Službeno je, pak, nagradni fond Davis Cupa iznosio 15,3 milijuna dolara.
Španjolski dnevnik Marca, pak, spominje kako je ITF tražio od Kosmosa isplatu od 40 milijuna dolara, kao proviziju (i valjda garanciju) kako bi stvari i u 2023. išle dalje kako je dogovoreno. S time da bi se ta provizija trebala u 2024. još malo i povećati.
Međutim, Kosmos je očito posve zaglibio jer unatoč tome što su se prihodi od posljednjeg izdanja Davis Cupa povećali, to nije bilo dovoljno da pokrije minuse nastale u izuzetno lošim početnim godinama “nove ere”. L’Equipe spominje gubitke od nekoliko desetaka milijuna eura. I zato ITF nije imao izbora nego jednostavno isključiti Kosmos...pišu Sportske novosti
- ITF je kao skrbnik povijesnog natjecanja osigurao da su financijske obaveze ispunjene, a natjecanje će se u 2023. odvijati prema već utvrđenom rasporedu, pa će se tako i Final 8 turnir održati u Malagi u studenom. Pri svemu tome, fokusirani smo na daljnji razvoj i rast Davis Cupa.

Na poticaj Kosmosa i Piquea, a pod parolom “modernizacije Davis Cupa”, srušena je više od stoljeća stara tradicija i sustav odigravanja mečeva. Ukinuli su kup-sustav natjecanja s igranjem klasičnih dvoboja i domaćinstva kod jedne od reprezentacija; ukinuli su igranje na tri dobivena seta; ukinuli su (maksimalno) četiri dvoboja u različitim terminima kroz godinu jer su htjeli staviti sve nagurati u jedan tjedan i na isto mjesto.
Iza svega se krila želja da, zapravo, natjecanje koncipiraju po uzoru na nogometno SP ili košarkaško ili rukometno. Dakle, da na jednom mjestu okupe 18 najboljih reprezentacija koje će prvo igrati po skupinama pa onda nokaut sustavom do konačnog pobjednika. I sve to u samo sedam do deset dana krajem studenog.
Prvo izdanje u Madridu 2019. godine bilo je debakl zbog praznih dvorana na skoro svim mečevima, osim kada je igrala Španjolska. Spominjala se ideja da se Davis Cup “proda” Abu Dhabiju, odnosno da se tamo održi finalni turnir. Nije se dogodilo, ali je sustav natjecanja nanovo promijenjen, pa podijeljen na grupnu fazu (s domaćinima u četiri europska grada) i završnicu u Španjolskoj u dva termina, rujan i studeni.
Kako god, sveukupno se ovaj eksperiment nije pokazao uspješnim. Niti se povećao broj gledatelja, niti se dobio veći spektakl, niti se tenisačima otvorilo puno više slobodnih tjedana u kalendaru, niti je privukao sve najbolje tenisače svijeta na sudjelovanje, a to su bile prokazivane kao glavne boljke starog sustava.
Novi ih nije ispravio, pri tome je i imidž još malo nagrđen, a ITF će morati tražiti i novog partnera. Hoće li to i na koji način uvjetovati nove promjene sustava natjecanja, ostaje za vidjeti. Sigurno je samo da je Pique prošlost...
