Na službenom Instagram profilu bollywoodske glumice Poonam Pandey (32) obožavatelji su bili šokirani viješću da je umrla od raka vrata maternice. "S dubokom tugom obavještavamo vas da je naša voljena Poonam izgubila život od raka vrata maternice. U ovo vrijeme tuge molimo za našu privatnost." Samo dan kasnije pokazalo se da glumica zapravo nije umrla i da je to bila lažna vijest u želji za podizanjem svijesti o bolesti.

"Osjećam da ovo moram podijeliti s tobom. Evo me, živa sam. Rak vrata maternice nije bio smrtonosan za mene, ali je bio smrtonosan za tisuće žena", rekla je u video objavi, naglašavajući da su informacije i preventivne mjere, poput redovitog probira i cijepljenja, ključne za bolest.

Unatoč važnoj poruci, glumica je brzo postala meta kritika zbog načina na koji je odabrala podizati svijet o bolesti. Mnogi su njezin potez nazvali nepoštivanjem žena koje su stvarno umrle od raka vrata maternice. "Ovo je najgori potez u povijesti", komentirao je jedan korisnik objavu bollywoodske glumice.

I glumica i organizacija s kojom je radila na podizanju svijesti o bolesti objavile su na Instagramu da su svjesne da je vijest o smrti šokirala mnoge. "Ispričavam se svima koje sam povrijedila. Namjera mi je bila šokirati i dovesti do razgovora o temi o kojoj ne govorimo dovoljno. Da, inscenirala sam svoju smrt. Znam da je ovaj potez ekstreman, ali sada svi govorimo o raku vrata maternice. To je bolest koja vam tiho oduzima život. Ponosna sam na ono što je vijest o mojoj smrti postigla."
