Hoće li osoba s Covidom-19 razviti ozbiljniji oblik bolesti ovisi uvelike o tome kako njezin imunološki sustav reagira na koronavirus. Istraživači su otkrili da ljudi s teškim Covidom imaju autoantitijela koja su se vezala za ključne proteine ​​koji sudjeluju u prepoznavanju, uzbunjivanju i čišćenju stanica zaraženih koronavirusom. Ti proteini uključuju citokine i kemokine, važne glasnike imunološkog sustava. Znanstvenici s Yalea koji su proveli najnovije istraživanje, koristili su novu tehniku ​​koja je pregledala autoantitijela koja djeluju protiv tisuća tjelesnih bjelančevina. Tražili su autoantitijela u 170 hospitaliziranih pacijenata i uspoređivali ih s autoantitijelima koja su pronađena kod ljudi koji su patili od blage bolesti ili asimptomatske infekcije, kao i kod ljudi koji nisu bili zaraženi virusom.
