U starijih osoba kojima je uklonjena siva mrena zbog poboljšanja vida uočena je 30 posto manja vjerojatnost od razvoja raznih oblika demencije, pokazalo je novo istraživanje, a prenosi New Scientist.
Znanstvenici vjeruju da je oštećenje vida jedan od čimbenika rizika za razvoj demencije, dijelom zbog toga što takve osobe obično više vremena provode kod kuće, pa im je i kognitivna stimulacija slabija, a to može rezultirati društvenom izolacijom.
Sivu mrenu (kataraktu) uzrokuju uobičajene promjene u oku koje nastaju s godinama, a karakterizira je zamućenje očne leće.
Jedan je od najčešćih uzroka gubitka vida kod starijih ljudi, no danas se to stanje uspješno liječi operacijom uklanjanja "zamagljene" leće i ugradnjom umjetne, intraokularne leće.
Otprije je poznato da je gubitak vida jedan od čimbenika rizika za razvoj Alzheimerove bolesti i ostalih oblika demencije.
Cecilia Lee sa Sveučilišta Washington u Seattleu pokušala je ustanoviti je li operacija katarakte u značajnijoj korelaciji s incidencijom demencije.
Ona i njezini kolege iskoristili su saznanja iz opsežne američke studije koja je započela devedesetih godina, a svrha joj je identificirati čimbenike rizika za razvoj demencije.
Američki tim stručnjaka proučio je zdravstvene kartone oko 3000 sudionika u dobi od 65 ili više godina. Svi su imali sivu mrenu ili glaukom, još jedno stanje oka koje napada očni živac, a liječi se operativnim putem.
Njihovo zdravstveno stanje redovito je praćeno u razdoblju od 10 godina nakon uklanjanja mrene.
Ustanovili su da su u ispitanika kojima je odstranjena siva mrena u predstojećih osam godina u prosjeku izgledi za razvoj demencije iznosili 71 posto u odnosu na osobe kod kojih je ona bila neliječena.
Operacijom se vjerojatno smanjuje rizik od razvoja demencije zato što se njome omogućuje "kvalitetniji senzorni input u mrežnicu pa se na taj način poboljšavaju podražaji u mozgu", rekla je Lee.
Druga je pretpostavka da, s obzirom na to da katarakta filtrira plavo svjetlo, dolazi do poremećaja osjeta svjetlosti u stanicama stražnjeg dijela oka koje su posebno osjetljive na to svjetlo i pridonose upravljanju našim tjelesnim satom. To bi moglo poremetiti naš uobičajeni cirkadijalni ritam, koji se ranije povezivao s demencijom.
"Budući da katarakta utječe na sveukupnu kvalitetu svjetlosti koja dopire do mrežnice, uključujući i plavo svjetlo, operacija sive mrene može omogućiti reaktivaciju tih stanica i spriječiti kognitivno propadanje", rekla je Lee.

U starijih osoba kojima je uklonjena siva mrena zbog poboljšanja vida uočena je 30 posto manja vjerojatnost od razvoja raznih oblika demencije, pokazalo je novo istraživanje, a prenosi New Scientist.
Znanstvenici vjeruju da je oštećenje vida jedan od čimbenika rizika za razvoj demencije, dijelom zbog toga što takve osobe obično više vremena provode kod kuće, pa im je i kognitivna stimulacija slabija, a to može rezultirati društvenom izolacijom.
Sivu mrenu (kataraktu) uzrokuju uobičajene promjene u oku koje nastaju s godinama, a karakterizira je zamućenje očne leće.
Jedan je od najčešćih uzroka gubitka vida kod starijih ljudi, no danas se to stanje uspješno liječi operacijom uklanjanja "zamagljene" leće i ugradnjom umjetne, intraokularne leće.
Otprije je poznato da je gubitak vida jedan od čimbenika rizika za razvoj Alzheimerove bolesti i ostalih oblika demencije.
Cecilia Lee sa Sveučilišta Washington u Seattleu pokušala je ustanoviti je li operacija katarakte u značajnijoj korelaciji s incidencijom demencije.
Ona i njezini kolege iskoristili su saznanja iz opsežne američke studije koja je započela devedesetih godina, a svrha joj je identificirati čimbenike rizika za razvoj demencije.
Američki tim stručnjaka proučio je zdravstvene kartone oko 3000 sudionika u dobi od 65 ili više godina. Svi su imali sivu mrenu ili glaukom, još jedno stanje oka koje napada očni živac, a liječi se operativnim putem.
Njihovo zdravstveno stanje redovito je praćeno u razdoblju od 10 godina nakon uklanjanja mrene.
Ustanovili su da su u ispitanika kojima je odstranjena siva mrena u predstojećih osam godina u prosjeku izgledi za razvoj demencije iznosili 71 posto u odnosu na osobe kod kojih je ona bila neliječena.
Operacijom se vjerojatno smanjuje rizik od razvoja demencije zato što se njome omogućuje "kvalitetniji senzorni input u mrežnicu pa se na taj način poboljšavaju podražaji u mozgu", rekla je Lee.
Druga je pretpostavka da, s obzirom na to da katarakta filtrira plavo svjetlo, dolazi do poremećaja osjeta svjetlosti u stanicama stražnjeg dijela oka koje su posebno osjetljive na to svjetlo i pridonose upravljanju našim tjelesnim satom. To bi moglo poremetiti naš uobičajeni cirkadijalni ritam, koji se ranije povezivao s demencijom.
"Budući da katarakta utječe na sveukupnu kvalitetu svjetlosti koja dopire do mrežnice, uključujući i plavo svjetlo, operacija sive mrene može omogućiti reaktivaciju tih stanica i spriječiti kognitivno propadanje", rekla je Lee.
