Za antarktičke carske pingvine, kažu stručnjaci, nema više vremena. Nove studije predviđaju sumornu budućnost za ove divne ptice, koje su prošle godine doživjele neviđeni neuspjeh prilikom razmnožavanja - i to zbog rekordno niske razine leda na moru, piše National Geographic. Za carske pingvine morski led je neophodan za preživljavanje. Ove ptice, koje se nalaze samo na Antarktici, razmnožavaju se, polažu jaja i podižu svoje mlade na tvrdom morskom ledu (vezanom za kopno).

Na svoja mjesta za razmnožavanje stižu krajem ožujka. U svibnju i lipnju polažu jaja koja se izlegu nakon 65 dana tijekom surove antarktičke zime. Ptići tada ostaju na ledu sve dok njihovo pahuljasto paperje ne zamijeni vodootporno perje, u ljetnim mjesecima prosincu i siječnju. Prošle godine razina morskog leda na Antarktici bila je na najnižoj razini u povijesti - rekord je prvi put postavljen 2021. Regija Bellingshausenova mora, zapadno od Antarktičkog poluotoka, zabilježila je najekstremnije smanjenje morskog leda, a neka su područja doživjela potpuni gubitak.

Prvi zabilježeni incidenti

Od pet poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina u području Bellingshausenova mora, sve osim jedne doživjele su potpuni neuspjeh razmnožavanja zbog gubitka morskog leda, navodi se u radu objavljenom u časopisu Nature Communications Earth & Environment. Satelitske snimke jasno pokazuju da se morski led raspao prije nego što su se mali pingvini dovoljno razvili da sami prežive.

- Nikada nismo vidjeli ovakav neuspjeh razmnožavanja u jednoj sezoni. Gubitak morskog leda u ovoj regiji tijekom antarktičkog ljeta ostavio je vrlo male šanse za preživljavanje mladunaca - rekao je glavni autor studije Peter Fretwell iz British Antarctic Survey. Od 2009. godine bilo je izoliranih slučajeva neuspjeha razmnožavanja zbog brzog gubitka leda diljem Antarktike - ali ovo je prvi zabilježeni incident na širokom području.

Istraživački tim također vjeruje da će, ako se sadašnje stope zagrijavanja nastave, više od 80 posto kolonija carskih pingvina biti osuđeno na izumiranje, što znači da će imati premalo jedinki da podrže populaciju do 2100. godine. Sve do 2015. morski led na Antarktici se povećavao. Ali od tada kontinent je doživio četiri godine najniže razine leda u 45 godina satelitskih zapisa. Između 2018. i 2022. godine, 30 posto poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina na ovom kontinentu bilo je pogođeno djelomičnim ili potpunim gubitkom morskog leda.

- Ne čini se da će ova godina pokazati napredak. Velik dio morskog leda i ove zime nedostaje. Ključna oceanska struja usporava, a ledenjaci i ledene ploče se raspadaju, tvrdi Dana M. Bergstrom sa Sveučilišta Wollongong, koja je provela 40 godina radeći na istraživanju Antarktika.

Uzgoj mladih

Nedavni neuspjesi razmnožavanja pingvina mogli bi biti pokazatelj onoga što će se u budućnosti dogoditi, kaže Norman Ratcliffe iz British Antarctic Survey, koautor nove studije. Carski se pingvini ne oslanjaju samo na stabilan morski led za razmnožavanje i uzgoj mladih, već i za zaštitu od grabežljivaca. Istraživači će sada promatrati hoće li se kolonije u Bellingshausenu vratiti na svoja uobičajena mjesta za razmnožavanje ili će istražiti nove opcije.

- Carski pingvini su sposobni kretati se kako bi se nosili s gubicima staništa. Bellingshausenovo more golemo je područje, ali ne znamo kakve mogućnosti imaju za preseljenje u potpuno drugi dio Antarktika - kaže Ratcliffe.

Carski pingvini važni su u antarktičkom hranidbenom lancu. Oni su također divna, karizmatična vrsta s kojom su ljudi upoznati preko brojnih dokumentaraca. Svijet bez njih bio bi siromašnije mjesto.

Konkretni prijedlozi za zaštitu pingvina u bliskoj budućnosti uključuju ograničavanje pristupa istraživačima i turistima (ionako rijetkima) kako bi se ograničilo uznemiravanje životinja i onečišćenje područja. Najveća prijetnja carskim pingvinima ipak su klimatske promjene. Kako se svijet bude zagrijavao, morski led će se smanjivati i to će ugrožavati ekosustav.

Za vrste kao što je carski pingvin kriza je već nastupila, kažu zabrinuti znanstvenici.

Za antarktičke carske pingvine, kažu stručnjaci, nema više vremena. Nove studije predviđaju sumornu budućnost za ove divne ptice, koje su prošle godine doživjele neviđeni neuspjeh prilikom razmnožavanja - i to zbog rekordno niske razine leda na moru, piše National Geographic. Za carske pingvine morski led je neophodan za preživljavanje. Ove ptice, koje se nalaze samo na Antarktici, razmnožavaju se, polažu jaja i podižu svoje mlade na tvrdom morskom ledu (vezanom za kopno).

Na svoja mjesta za razmnožavanje stižu krajem ožujka. U svibnju i lipnju polažu jaja koja se izlegu nakon 65 dana tijekom surove antarktičke zime. Ptići tada ostaju na ledu sve dok njihovo pahuljasto paperje ne zamijeni vodootporno perje, u ljetnim mjesecima prosincu i siječnju. Prošle godine razina morskog leda na Antarktici bila je na najnižoj razini u povijesti - rekord je prvi put postavljen 2021. Regija Bellingshausenova mora, zapadno od Antarktičkog poluotoka, zabilježila je najekstremnije smanjenje morskog leda, a neka su područja doživjela potpuni gubitak.

Prvi zabilježeni incidenti

Od pet poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina u području Bellingshausenova mora, sve osim jedne doživjele su potpuni neuspjeh razmnožavanja zbog gubitka morskog leda, navodi se u radu objavljenom u časopisu Nature Communications Earth & Environment. Satelitske snimke jasno pokazuju da se morski led raspao prije nego što su se mali pingvini dovoljno razvili da sami prežive.

- Nikada nismo vidjeli ovakav neuspjeh razmnožavanja u jednoj sezoni. Gubitak morskog leda u ovoj regiji tijekom antarktičkog ljeta ostavio je vrlo male šanse za preživljavanje mladunaca - rekao je glavni autor studije Peter Fretwell iz British Antarctic Survey. Od 2009. godine bilo je izoliranih slučajeva neuspjeha razmnožavanja zbog brzog gubitka leda diljem Antarktike - ali ovo je prvi zabilježeni incident na širokom području.

Istraživački tim također vjeruje da će, ako se sadašnje stope zagrijavanja nastave, više od 80 posto kolonija carskih pingvina biti osuđeno na izumiranje, što znači da će imati premalo jedinki da podrže populaciju do 2100. godine. Sve do 2015. morski led na Antarktici se povećavao. Ali od tada kontinent je doživio četiri godine najniže razine leda u 45 godina satelitskih zapisa. Između 2018. i 2022. godine, 30 posto poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina na ovom kontinentu bilo je pogođeno djelomičnim ili potpunim gubitkom morskog leda.

- Ne čini se da će ova godina pokazati napredak. Velik dio morskog leda i ove zime nedostaje. Ključna oceanska struja usporava, a ledenjaci i ledene ploče se raspadaju, tvrdi Dana M. Bergstrom sa Sveučilišta Wollongong, koja je provela 40 godina radeći na istraživanju Antarktika.

Uzgoj mladih

Nedavni neuspjesi razmnožavanja pingvina mogli bi biti pokazatelj onoga što će se u budućnosti dogoditi, kaže Norman Ratcliffe iz British Antarctic Survey, koautor nove studije. Carski se pingvini ne oslanjaju samo na stabilan morski led za razmnožavanje i uzgoj mladih, već i za zaštitu od grabežljivaca. Istraživači će sada promatrati hoće li se kolonije u Bellingshausenu vratiti na svoja uobičajena mjesta za razmnožavanje ili će istražiti nove opcije.

- Carski pingvini su sposobni kretati se kako bi se nosili s gubicima staništa. Bellingshausenovo more golemo je područje, ali ne znamo kakve mogućnosti imaju za preseljenje u potpuno drugi dio Antarktika - kaže Ratcliffe.

Carski pingvini važni su u antarktičkom hranidbenom lancu. Oni su također divna, karizmatična vrsta s kojom su ljudi upoznati preko brojnih dokumentaraca. Svijet bez njih bio bi siromašnije mjesto.

Konkretni prijedlozi za zaštitu pingvina u bliskoj budućnosti uključuju ograničavanje pristupa istraživačima i turistima (ionako rijetkima) kako bi se ograničilo uznemiravanje životinja i onečišćenje područja. Najveća prijetnja carskim pingvinima ipak su klimatske promjene. Kako se svijet bude zagrijavao, morski led će se smanjivati i to će ugrožavati ekosustav.

Za vrste kao što je carski pingvin kriza je već nastupila, kažu zabrinuti znanstvenici.

Za antarktičke carske pingvine, kažu stručnjaci, nema više vremena. Nove studije predviđaju sumornu budućnost za ove divne ptice, koje su prošle godine doživjele neviđeni neuspjeh prilikom razmnožavanja - i to zbog rekordno niske razine leda na moru, piše National Geographic. Za carske pingvine morski led je neophodan za preživljavanje. Ove ptice, koje se nalaze samo na Antarktici, razmnožavaju se, polažu jaja i podižu svoje mlade na tvrdom morskom ledu (vezanom za kopno).

Na svoja mjesta za razmnožavanje stižu krajem ožujka. U svibnju i lipnju polažu jaja koja se izlegu nakon 65 dana tijekom surove antarktičke zime. Ptići tada ostaju na ledu sve dok njihovo pahuljasto paperje ne zamijeni vodootporno perje, u ljetnim mjesecima prosincu i siječnju. Prošle godine razina morskog leda na Antarktici bila je na najnižoj razini u povijesti - rekord je prvi put postavljen 2021. Regija Bellingshausenova mora, zapadno od Antarktičkog poluotoka, zabilježila je najekstremnije smanjenje morskog leda, a neka su područja doživjela potpuni gubitak.

Prvi zabilježeni incidenti

Od pet poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina u području Bellingshausenova mora, sve osim jedne doživjele su potpuni neuspjeh razmnožavanja zbog gubitka morskog leda, navodi se u radu objavljenom u časopisu Nature Communications Earth & Environment. Satelitske snimke jasno pokazuju da se morski led raspao prije nego što su se mali pingvini dovoljno razvili da sami prežive.

- Nikada nismo vidjeli ovakav neuspjeh razmnožavanja u jednoj sezoni. Gubitak morskog leda u ovoj regiji tijekom antarktičkog ljeta ostavio je vrlo male šanse za preživljavanje mladunaca - rekao je glavni autor studije Peter Fretwell iz British Antarctic Survey. Od 2009. godine bilo je izoliranih slučajeva neuspjeha razmnožavanja zbog brzog gubitka leda diljem Antarktike - ali ovo je prvi zabilježeni incident na širokom području.

Istraživački tim također vjeruje da će, ako se sadašnje stope zagrijavanja nastave, više od 80 posto kolonija carskih pingvina biti osuđeno na izumiranje, što znači da će imati premalo jedinki da podrže populaciju do 2100. godine. Sve do 2015. morski led na Antarktici se povećavao. Ali od tada kontinent je doživio četiri godine najniže razine leda u 45 godina satelitskih zapisa. Između 2018. i 2022. godine, 30 posto poznatih kolonija carskih pingvina na ovom kontinentu bilo je pogođeno djelomičnim ili potpunim gubitkom morskog leda.

- Ne čini se da će ova godina pokazati napredak. Velik dio morskog leda i ove zime nedostaje. Ključna oceanska struja usporava, a ledenjaci i ledene ploče se raspadaju, tvrdi Dana M. Bergstrom sa Sveučilišta Wollongong, koja je provela 40 godina radeći na istraživanju Antarktika.

Uzgoj mladih

Nedavni neuspjesi razmnožavanja pingvina mogli bi biti pokazatelj onoga što će se u budućnosti dogoditi, kaže Norman Ratcliffe iz British Antarctic Survey, koautor nove studije. Carski se pingvini ne oslanjaju samo na stabilan morski led za razmnožavanje i uzgoj mladih, već i za zaštitu od grabežljivaca. Istraživači će sada promatrati hoće li se kolonije u Bellingshausenu vratiti na svoja uobičajena mjesta za razmnožavanje ili će istražiti nove opcije.

- Carski pingvini su sposobni kretati se kako bi se nosili s gubicima staništa. Bellingshausenovo more golemo je područje, ali ne znamo kakve mogućnosti imaju za preseljenje u potpuno drugi dio Antarktika - kaže Ratcliffe.

Carski pingvini važni su u antarktičkom hranidbenom lancu. Oni su također divna, karizmatična vrsta s kojom su ljudi upoznati preko brojnih dokumentaraca. Svijet bez njih bio bi siromašnije mjesto.

Konkretni prijedlozi za zaštitu pingvina u bliskoj budućnosti uključuju ograničavanje pristupa istraživačima i turistima (ionako rijetkima) kako bi se ograničilo uznemiravanje životinja i onečišćenje područja. Najveća prijetnja carskim pingvinima ipak su klimatske promjene. Kako se svijet bude zagrijavao, morski led će se smanjivati i to će ugrožavati ekosustav.

Za vrste kao što je carski pingvin kriza je već nastupila, kažu zabrinuti znanstvenici.
