Eksperimenti na ljudima, posebno pripadnicima marginaliziranih skupina, u prošlosti su često prelazili etičke granice. Jedan od najpoznatijih takvih eksperimenata je takozvana "Čudovišna studija" ("The Monster Study"), čije detalje donosi Practical Psychology.

Sama ideja ove studije za psihologe je bila toliko zastrašujuća da su rezultati skrivani godinama.

"Čudovišno istraživanje" proveo je doktor Wendell Johnson. On je bio logoped koji je htio saznati zašto se kod pojedine djece javlja mucanje. Razvio je "The Monster Study" kako bi provjerio je li mucanje posljedica biologije ili naučeno ponašanje.

Doktor Johnson je 1936. godine na Sveučilištu u Iowi proveo kontroverzni eksperiment. 

Logoped je odabrao 22 siročadi kao sudionike svoje studije. Neka od te djece su mucala, druga su govorila normalno za svoj uzrast.

Siročad su podijeljena u dvije grupe, a u svakoj se nalazio jednak broj djece koja mucaju i koja ne mucaju. Jedna od tih grupa bila je označena kao "normalni govornici". Ostali su označeni kao "mucači". Tijekom eksperimenta djecu se tretiralo u odnosu na to kojoj grupi pripadaju, bez obzira na to jesu li doista mucali ili ne. 

Johnsonov tim se sastajao s djecom svakih nekoliko tjedana tijekom pet mjeseci kako bi procijenio njihov govor. Djeca iz "normalne" grupe pohvaljena su zbog svoje sposobnosti govora, čak i ako su zapravo mucala ili su imala problema s govorom. Djeci u grupi "mucači" rečeno je da govore loše, prenosi National Geographic.

U jesen 1938. godine Wendell Johnson je regrutirao jednu od svojih bivših studentica, 22-godišnju ​Mary Tudor​, koja je diplomirala kliničku psihologiju, da se pridruži eksperimentu. ​Ona je bila strastvena, ali plašljiva. Trebala je proučiti hoće li to što se djeci koja ne mucaju govori da mucaju utjecati na stvaranje problema u njihovom govoru. Sveučilište je imalo stalni istraživački odnos sa sirotištem u Davenportu u Iowi pa joj je Johnson predložio da tamo provede istraživanje.

Johnsonova studija nije samo pokušavala da izazove mucanje kod zdrave djece, nego je i istraživala i hoće li pohvala pomoći djeci koja mucaju da "normalno" progovore. Tudor i još pet studenata koji su pristali na sudjelovanje slušali su svako dijete kako govori i ocjenjivali ih ocjenom od 1 (loše) do 5 (tečno).

- Nespreman za razgovor, ali jasno pokazuje problem mucanja - napisao je jedan od studenata prilikom ocjenjivanja djeteta i njegova govora.

- Napetost, odugovlačenje, eksplozivnost, ponavljanje - napisao je drugi.

Tudor je napisala kako "vjeruje da će se s vremenom djeca oporaviti, ali da su istraživači ostavili trajan trag".

Bila je u pravu.

U svojoj je disertaciji izvijestila da je razgovarala s djecom koja mucaju i kojima je govorila da zapravo ne mucaju te ih poticala izjavama poput: "Prerast ćeš to pa ćeš moći govoriti puno bolje nego što sad govoriš... Ne obraćaj pažnju na ono što drugi govore o tvojim govornim sposobnostima jer ne shvaćaju da je ovo samo faza", napisala je.

- Osoblje je zaključilo da imaš velikih problema s govorom... Imaš mnoge simptome djeteta koje počinje mucati. Svaki put kad osjetiš da ćeš zamucati, moraš odmah prestati govoriti - govorila je djeci koja su stavljena u grupu "mucača", a koja nisu imala problem s mucanjem.

- Koristi svoju snagu volje. Učini sve da spriječiš mucanje. Nikad nemoj govoriti ako to ne radiš kako treba - govorila im je.

Nakon drugog sastanka s petogodišnjom Normom Jean Pugh, Tudor je napisala: "Bilo ju je jako teško natjerati da progovori, iako je prije mjesec dana govorila vrlo slobodno. Još jedna u grupi, devetogodišnja Betty Romp praktički odbija razgovarati, piše 'New York Times'.

"​Hazel Potter, 15 godina, najstarija u svojoj grupi, postala je puno nesigurnija i manje govori nego prije", primijetila je Tudor.

Rezultati istraživanja​

Djeca koja su označena kao "normalna" nisu bila ugrožena pohvalama istraživača. A poboljšanje govora je primijećeno samo kod jednog djeteta iz ove grupe koje je mucalo.

Djeca u grupi "mucača" prošla su mnogo gore, osobito ona koja nisu imala problem s mucanjem, nego im je samo rečeno da ih imaju. Od šestero djece koja su kažnjavana zbog nepostojećih problema s mucanjem, petero je razvilo govorne probleme. Izvještaji pokazuju da su se ta djeca povukla, a neka su potpuno prestala govoriti. Ta djeca su tada imala samo pet godina.

Studija je osmišljena s najboljim namjerama. Johnson i njegovi kolege često su provodili istraživanja na sebi i odraslim dobrovoljcima tražeći lijek za mucanje.

Dio istraživača koji su sudjelovali u eksperimentu brinuo je da ovakav tretman siročadi prelazi etičke granice.

Ispitanici nisu znali da su bili dio istraživanja čak ni šezdeset godina nakon što se dogodilo. Nekolicina studenata patologije govora sa Sveučilišta Iowa saznalo za studiju nakon što je objavljena. Podaci su bili korisni jer nitko u to vrijeme nije prikupio toliko podataka o mucanju i njegovom porijeklu. Ali premisa studije bila je toliko zastrašujuća da su joj studenti dali nadimak "Čudovišna studija".

Javnost je saznala za ovaj eksperiment tek 2001. godine kad je "The San Jose Mercury News" objavio niz članaka o studiji i komentare logopeda. Dok su neki tvrdili da je eksperiment prešao etičke granice, drugi su tvrdili da je taj način istraživanja samo rezultat svog vremena. Neki su priznali važnost podataka, dok su drugi rekli da istraživači nisu došli do pravih zaključaka, piše Practical Psychology.

Eksperimenti na ljudima, posebno pripadnicima marginaliziranih skupina, u prošlosti su često prelazili etičke granice. Jedan od najpoznatijih takvih eksperimenata je takozvana "Čudovišna studija" ("The Monster Study"), čije detalje donosi Practical Psychology.

Sama ideja ove studije za psihologe je bila toliko zastrašujuća da su rezultati skrivani godinama.

"Čudovišno istraživanje" proveo je doktor Wendell Johnson. On je bio logoped koji je htio saznati zašto se kod pojedine djece javlja mucanje. Razvio je "The Monster Study" kako bi provjerio je li mucanje posljedica biologije ili naučeno ponašanje.

Doktor Johnson je 1936. godine na Sveučilištu u Iowi proveo kontroverzni eksperiment. 

Logoped je odabrao 22 siročadi kao sudionike svoje studije. Neka od te djece su mucala, druga su govorila normalno za svoj uzrast.

Siročad su podijeljena u dvije grupe, a u svakoj se nalazio jednak broj djece koja mucaju i koja ne mucaju. Jedna od tih grupa bila je označena kao "normalni govornici". Ostali su označeni kao "mucači". Tijekom eksperimenta djecu se tretiralo u odnosu na to kojoj grupi pripadaju, bez obzira na to jesu li doista mucali ili ne. 

Johnsonov tim se sastajao s djecom svakih nekoliko tjedana tijekom pet mjeseci kako bi procijenio njihov govor. Djeca iz "normalne" grupe pohvaljena su zbog svoje sposobnosti govora, čak i ako su zapravo mucala ili su imala problema s govorom. Djeci u grupi "mucači" rečeno je da govore loše, prenosi National Geographic.

U jesen 1938. godine Wendell Johnson je regrutirao jednu od svojih bivših studentica, 22-godišnju ​Mary Tudor​, koja je diplomirala kliničku psihologiju, da se pridruži eksperimentu. ​Ona je bila strastvena, ali plašljiva. Trebala je proučiti hoće li to što se djeci koja ne mucaju govori da mucaju utjecati na stvaranje problema u njihovom govoru. Sveučilište je imalo stalni istraživački odnos sa sirotištem u Davenportu u Iowi pa joj je Johnson predložio da tamo provede istraživanje.

Johnsonova studija nije samo pokušavala da izazove mucanje kod zdrave djece, nego je i istraživala i hoće li pohvala pomoći djeci koja mucaju da "normalno" progovore. Tudor i još pet studenata koji su pristali na sudjelovanje slušali su svako dijete kako govori i ocjenjivali ih ocjenom od 1 (loše) do 5 (tečno).

- Nespreman za razgovor, ali jasno pokazuje problem mucanja - napisao je jedan od studenata prilikom ocjenjivanja djeteta i njegova govora.

- Napetost, odugovlačenje, eksplozivnost, ponavljanje - napisao je drugi.

Tudor je napisala kako "vjeruje da će se s vremenom djeca oporaviti, ali da su istraživači ostavili trajan trag".

Bila je u pravu.

U svojoj je disertaciji izvijestila da je razgovarala s djecom koja mucaju i kojima je govorila da zapravo ne mucaju te ih poticala izjavama poput: "Prerast ćeš to pa ćeš moći govoriti puno bolje nego što sad govoriš... Ne obraćaj pažnju na ono što drugi govore o tvojim govornim sposobnostima jer ne shvaćaju da je ovo samo faza", napisala je.

- Osoblje je zaključilo da imaš velikih problema s govorom... Imaš mnoge simptome djeteta koje počinje mucati. Svaki put kad osjetiš da ćeš zamucati, moraš odmah prestati govoriti - govorila je djeci koja su stavljena u grupu "mucača", a koja nisu imala problem s mucanjem.

- Koristi svoju snagu volje. Učini sve da spriječiš mucanje. Nikad nemoj govoriti ako to ne radiš kako treba - govorila im je.

Nakon drugog sastanka s petogodišnjom Normom Jean Pugh, Tudor je napisala: "Bilo ju je jako teško natjerati da progovori, iako je prije mjesec dana govorila vrlo slobodno. Još jedna u grupi, devetogodišnja Betty Romp praktički odbija razgovarati, piše 'New York Times'.

"​Hazel Potter, 15 godina, najstarija u svojoj grupi, postala je puno nesigurnija i manje govori nego prije", primijetila je Tudor.

Rezultati istraživanja​

Djeca koja su označena kao "normalna" nisu bila ugrožena pohvalama istraživača. A poboljšanje govora je primijećeno samo kod jednog djeteta iz ove grupe koje je mucalo.

Djeca u grupi "mucača" prošla su mnogo gore, osobito ona koja nisu imala problem s mucanjem, nego im je samo rečeno da ih imaju. Od šestero djece koja su kažnjavana zbog nepostojećih problema s mucanjem, petero je razvilo govorne probleme. Izvještaji pokazuju da su se ta djeca povukla, a neka su potpuno prestala govoriti. Ta djeca su tada imala samo pet godina.

Studija je osmišljena s najboljim namjerama. Johnson i njegovi kolege često su provodili istraživanja na sebi i odraslim dobrovoljcima tražeći lijek za mucanje.

Dio istraživača koji su sudjelovali u eksperimentu brinuo je da ovakav tretman siročadi prelazi etičke granice.

Ispitanici nisu znali da su bili dio istraživanja čak ni šezdeset godina nakon što se dogodilo. Nekolicina studenata patologije govora sa Sveučilišta Iowa saznalo za studiju nakon što je objavljena. Podaci su bili korisni jer nitko u to vrijeme nije prikupio toliko podataka o mucanju i njegovom porijeklu. Ali premisa studije bila je toliko zastrašujuća da su joj studenti dali nadimak "Čudovišna studija".

Javnost je saznala za ovaj eksperiment tek 2001. godine kad je "The San Jose Mercury News" objavio niz članaka o studiji i komentare logopeda. Dok su neki tvrdili da je eksperiment prešao etičke granice, drugi su tvrdili da je taj način istraživanja samo rezultat svog vremena. Neki su priznali važnost podataka, dok su drugi rekli da istraživači nisu došli do pravih zaključaka, piše Practical Psychology.
