Lasersko istraživanje ruševina drevnog grada Calakmula na jugu Meksika proizvelo je nove dokaze koji upućuju na to da se možda radilo o najgušće naseljenom majanskom urbanom središtu tijekom vrhunca te civilizacije prije otprilike 1,300 godina.
Nova laserska studija, koju je ovaj tjedan objavio meksički institut za starine INAH, bavi se džunglom prekrivenim ruševinama nekoć velikog grada Calakmula, smještenog na jugu poluotoka Yucatana, blizu granice s Gvatemalom.
Calakmul je cvjetao tijekom vrhunca majanske civilizacije između 250. i 900. godine poslije Krista, a sadržavao je ogromne piramide, palače i komplekse hramova, od čega je iskopan tek djelić.
Kathryn Reese-Taylor, znanstvenica sa Sveučilišta u Calgaryju povezana s istraživanjem, objasnila je videovezom da nove karte ruševina otkrivaju brojne ranije nepoznate građevine, što upućuje na to da je Calakmul bio gušće naseljen i od Tikala, drevne majanske metropole na sjeveru Gvatemale, za koju se dugo smatralo da je bilo najveće urbano središte te civilizacije.
Laserska tehnologija kartiranja LIDAR, kojom je izrađeno ovo istraživanje, koristi zrakoplove s kojih se emitiraju zrake svjetlosti koje prodiru ispod gustog šumskog pokrova, što istraživačima omogućuje da uklone vegetaciju i otkriju drevne građevine koje se nalaze ispod.
Reese-Taylor je rekla da nove preliminarne karte pokazuju velike stambene komplekse, koji se nalaze oko hramova i možda oko tržnica.
Prethodne procjene broja stanovnika su iznosile otprilike 50,000 stanovnika, no novo istraživanje bi moglo potaknuti nove izračune.
INAH je u izjavi poručio da sama gustoća građevina ukazuje na veliko stanovništvo, a ranije nepoznati kanali, terase i brane, na to da su ih Maje vjerojatno izgradili kako bi osigurali zalihe vode i potaknuli poljoprivredu.
- Ima toliko detalja, velikih i malih struktura, rekao je stručnjak za Maje s meksičkog Nacionalnog autonomnog sveučilišta Felix Kupprat, koji je također dio istraživačke skupine.
Istraživanje je objavljeno u vrijeme kada je meksička vlada ubrzala izgradnju željezničke pruge u vrijednosti od više milijardi dolara kako bi povećala broj posjeta i potaknula razvoj arheološki bogate, ali gospodarski siromašne regije Yucatan.

Lasersko istraživanje ruševina drevnog grada Calakmula na jugu Meksika proizvelo je nove dokaze koji upućuju na to da se možda radilo o najgušće naseljenom majanskom urbanom središtu tijekom vrhunca te civilizacije prije otprilike 1,300 godina.
Nova laserska studija, koju je ovaj tjedan objavio meksički institut za starine INAH, bavi se džunglom prekrivenim ruševinama nekoć velikog grada Calakmula, smještenog na jugu poluotoka Yucatana, blizu granice s Gvatemalom.
Calakmul je cvjetao tijekom vrhunca majanske civilizacije između 250. i 900. godine poslije Krista, a sadržavao je ogromne piramide, palače i komplekse hramova, od čega je iskopan tek djelić.
Kathryn Reese-Taylor, znanstvenica sa Sveučilišta u Calgaryju povezana s istraživanjem, objasnila je videovezom da nove karte ruševina otkrivaju brojne ranije nepoznate građevine, što upućuje na to da je Calakmul bio gušće naseljen i od Tikala, drevne majanske metropole na sjeveru Gvatemale, za koju se dugo smatralo da je bilo najveće urbano središte te civilizacije.
Laserska tehnologija kartiranja LIDAR, kojom je izrađeno ovo istraživanje, koristi zrakoplove s kojih se emitiraju zrake svjetlosti koje prodiru ispod gustog šumskog pokrova, što istraživačima omogućuje da uklone vegetaciju i otkriju drevne građevine koje se nalaze ispod.
Reese-Taylor je rekla da nove preliminarne karte pokazuju velike stambene komplekse, koji se nalaze oko hramova i možda oko tržnica.
Prethodne procjene broja stanovnika su iznosile otprilike 50,000 stanovnika, no novo istraživanje bi moglo potaknuti nove izračune.
INAH je u izjavi poručio da sama gustoća građevina ukazuje na veliko stanovništvo, a ranije nepoznati kanali, terase i brane, na to da su ih Maje vjerojatno izgradili kako bi osigurali zalihe vode i potaknuli poljoprivredu.
- Ima toliko detalja, velikih i malih struktura, rekao je stručnjak za Maje s meksičkog Nacionalnog autonomnog sveučilišta Felix Kupprat, koji je također dio istraživačke skupine.
Istraživanje je objavljeno u vrijeme kada je meksička vlada ubrzala izgradnju željezničke pruge u vrijednosti od više milijardi dolara kako bi povećala broj posjeta i potaknula razvoj arheološki bogate, ali gospodarski siromašne regije Yucatan.
