Svašta sam pročitao i čuo o Quentinu Tarantinu, i da je genijalan, i da je grozan, samo se ne sjećam da je itko ikad o njemu kazao da je onako, srednja autorska žalost, ni umjetnička pirka ni eksploatacijski kanjac.

Ovaj vječito nacereni tip čija me vilica podsjeća na otvoreni škafetin, izvan svake sumnje raspolaže barem jednim talentom: da u javnosti polarizira mišljenja o samome sebi i nikoga ne ostavlja ravnodušnim.

Kako u tom smislu stoji moja malenkost? Hm, pa recimo da ga definitivno ne smatram genijem. Isprva sam, kao i svi, pao na njegov infantilni šarm entuzijastičnog filmofila koji je odgledao sve što mu je dopalo šaka.

Gdje god bi pronašao kolut celuloidne vrpce koju je netko eksponirao, svejedno radi li se o snimci nečije svadbe ili filmskome žurnalu, on bi je požurio staviti u projektor. No, vrlo brzo mi je postalo jasno kako njegov šarm ima dva lica. Iza simpatične, drske, juvenilne prčevitosti i vitalizma, stajali su (na žalost, i dan-danas stoje) adolescentski etos i estetika matineje.

Tarantino će uskoro ugaziti u sedmo desetljeće, a još uvijek je na mnogo načina zarobljen u sedamnaestoj godini života. I dalje ga nasmijava surovost, i dalje ga ne zanima svijet izvan mraka kino- dvorane, i dalje tjera likove da nas skandaliziraju klafranjem i trućanjem bez kraja i konca (iako on ustvari ni ne piše dramski razložne dijaloge, nego pušta noseće likove da do u beskraj monologiziraju, tretirajući druge osobe u kadru kao puke šponde ilitiga mantinele).

Pogađate, ima već neko vrijeme da sam od njega odustao. Za razliku od Tarantina, moja malenkost stari, a vrijeme koje mi je preostalo ne želim trošiti na (zamalo) vršnjake koji odbijaju odrasti.

Ovih dana morao sam, međutim, učiniti iznimku, jer se i sâm Quentin odlučio učiniti nešto nesvakidašnje i iznimno. Naime, romansirao je svoj scenarij za film „Bilo jednom u Hollywoodu“, a taj je libar ovih dana objavljen i kod nas u prijevodu Mirne Čubranić.

Pogađate, film nisam gledao, znam samo da je, kako to već biva s Tarantinom, izazvao oštro podijeljene reakcije i da je podugačak. Ni knjiga nije baš anoreksična, protegla se na više od 400 stranica, premda je za to teško naći dramsko pokriće, jer se u njoj malo što događa. Naime, u prvih nekoliko desetaka stranica upoznat ćemo njezine ključne likove kojima se do kraja knjige neće dogoditi ništa važno ili neočekivano. Ali kao i obično, likovi malo zanimaju Quentina Tarantina, jer svaki progovara glasom svoga tvorca, s individualnošću koja nije autentično njegova, nego autorova.

Godina je 1969. Rick Dalton, nekadašnja je televizijska zvijezda, a danas se nalazi na karijernoj nizbrdici. Cliff Booth je ubojica koji se izvukao nekažnjen, kaskader bez angažmana i nekadašnji Rickov dubler, koji mu sada služi kao neka vrsta osobnog asistenta.

U njihovoj blizini su glumica u usponu, Sharon Tate, i manijak koji hvata zalet, Charles Manson, koji će je sa svojom sljedbom masakrirati, ali tek nakon što pisac objavi kraj knjige. Velim da su u blizini, ali se njihove životne priče ne prepliću s Rickovom i Cliffovom.

Pa kojega vraga onda rade u knjizi? Isto bi se pitanje moglo postaviti i za gospodu Dalton i Booth. Stvar je, naime, u tome da Tarantinu junaci trebaju samo zato da bi na okupu držali nevjerojatnu količinu trivijalija, anegdota i bizarnosti iz vremena kad je stari Hollywood bio na samrtnoj postelji, a novi se još nije rodio.

Ionako rahlu naraciju, Tarantino često presijeca potpuno nefunkcionalnim digresijama, naklapajući o sadržaju pojedinih (naravno, nepostojećih) filmova. Neću reći da su ti pasaži sasvim lišeni zanimljivosti i šarma, ali upadljivo strše kao čisti višak.

Još i više iritira autorova potreba da se očeše o njemu potpuno nezanimljive i prenapuhane klasike koje lakonski otpisuje s malo riječi. Na dugome popisu žrtava našli su se tako Bergman, Antonioni, Fellini, Truffaut, Chabrol..., svi redom pretenciozni i dosadni.

Tarantino je svoj filmski ukus brusio u videoteci, a većina njegovih europskih vršnjaka u kinoteci, što će reći da na djelu imamo huntingtonovski sukob civilizacija. I kad već on nema milosti za prvi ešalon talijanskih ili francuskih autora, jer ih drži precijenjenim gnjavatorima, zašto bi moja malenkost imala obzira prema njemu? Zaključit ću, dakle, nemilosrdno, ali iskreno: kao romanopisac Quentin Tarantino, čak je i gori od scenariste i redatelja. Jer, filmova se on nagledao, ali se knjiga, bogami, nije načitao.

Svašta sam pročitao i čuo o Quentinu Tarantinu, i da je genijalan, i da je grozan, samo se ne sjećam da je itko ikad o njemu kazao da je onako, srednja autorska žalost, ni umjetnička pirka ni eksploatacijski kanjac.

Ovaj vječito nacereni tip čija me vilica podsjeća na otvoreni škafetin, izvan svake sumnje raspolaže barem jednim talentom: da u javnosti polarizira mišljenja o samome sebi i nikoga ne ostavlja ravnodušnim.

Kako u tom smislu stoji moja malenkost? Hm, pa recimo da ga definitivno ne smatram genijem. Isprva sam, kao i svi, pao na njegov infantilni šarm entuzijastičnog filmofila koji je odgledao sve što mu je dopalo šaka.

Gdje god bi pronašao kolut celuloidne vrpce koju je netko eksponirao, svejedno radi li se o snimci nečije svadbe ili filmskome žurnalu, on bi je požurio staviti u projektor. No, vrlo brzo mi je postalo jasno kako njegov šarm ima dva lica. Iza simpatične, drske, juvenilne prčevitosti i vitalizma, stajali su (na žalost, i dan-danas stoje) adolescentski etos i estetika matineje.

Tarantino će uskoro ugaziti u sedmo desetljeće, a još uvijek je na mnogo načina zarobljen u sedamnaestoj godini života. I dalje ga nasmijava surovost, i dalje ga ne zanima svijet izvan mraka kino- dvorane, i dalje tjera likove da nas skandaliziraju klafranjem i trućanjem bez kraja i konca (iako on ustvari ni ne piše dramski razložne dijaloge, nego pušta noseće likove da do u beskraj monologiziraju, tretirajući druge osobe u kadru kao puke šponde ilitiga mantinele).

Pogađate, ima već neko vrijeme da sam od njega odustao. Za razliku od Tarantina, moja malenkost stari, a vrijeme koje mi je preostalo ne želim trošiti na (zamalo) vršnjake koji odbijaju odrasti.

Ovih dana morao sam, međutim, učiniti iznimku, jer se i sâm Quentin odlučio učiniti nešto nesvakidašnje i iznimno. Naime, romansirao je svoj scenarij za film „Bilo jednom u Hollywoodu“, a taj je libar ovih dana objavljen i kod nas u prijevodu Mirne Čubranić.

Pogađate, film nisam gledao, znam samo da je, kako to već biva s Tarantinom, izazvao oštro podijeljene reakcije i da je podugačak. Ni knjiga nije baš anoreksična, protegla se na više od 400 stranica, premda je za to teško naći dramsko pokriće, jer se u njoj malo što događa. Naime, u prvih nekoliko desetaka stranica upoznat ćemo njezine ključne likove kojima se do kraja knjige neće dogoditi ništa važno ili neočekivano. Ali kao i obično, likovi malo zanimaju Quentina Tarantina, jer svaki progovara glasom svoga tvorca, s individualnošću koja nije autentično njegova, nego autorova.

Godina je 1969. Rick Dalton, nekadašnja je televizijska zvijezda, a danas se nalazi na karijernoj nizbrdici. Cliff Booth je ubojica koji se izvukao nekažnjen, kaskader bez angažmana i nekadašnji Rickov dubler, koji mu sada služi kao neka vrsta osobnog asistenta.

U njihovoj blizini su glumica u usponu, Sharon Tate, i manijak koji hvata zalet, Charles Manson, koji će je sa svojom sljedbom masakrirati, ali tek nakon što pisac objavi kraj knjige. Velim da su u blizini, ali se njihove životne priče ne prepliću s Rickovom i Cliffovom.

Pa kojega vraga onda rade u knjizi? Isto bi se pitanje moglo postaviti i za gospodu Dalton i Booth. Stvar je, naime, u tome da Tarantinu junaci trebaju samo zato da bi na okupu držali nevjerojatnu količinu trivijalija, anegdota i bizarnosti iz vremena kad je stari Hollywood bio na samrtnoj postelji, a novi se još nije rodio.

Ionako rahlu naraciju, Tarantino često presijeca potpuno nefunkcionalnim digresijama, naklapajući o sadržaju pojedinih (naravno, nepostojećih) filmova. Neću reći da su ti pasaži sasvim lišeni zanimljivosti i šarma, ali upadljivo strše kao čisti višak.

Još i više iritira autorova potreba da se očeše o njemu potpuno nezanimljive i prenapuhane klasike koje lakonski otpisuje s malo riječi. Na dugome popisu žrtava našli su se tako Bergman, Antonioni, Fellini, Truffaut, Chabrol..., svi redom pretenciozni i dosadni.

Tarantino je svoj filmski ukus brusio u videoteci, a većina njegovih europskih vršnjaka u kinoteci, što će reći da na djelu imamo huntingtonovski sukob civilizacija. I kad već on nema milosti za prvi ešalon talijanskih ili francuskih autora, jer ih drži precijenjenim gnjavatorima, zašto bi moja malenkost imala obzira prema njemu? Zaključit ću, dakle, nemilosrdno, ali iskreno: kao romanopisac Quentin Tarantino, čak je i gori od scenariste i redatelja. Jer, filmova se on nagledao, ali se knjiga, bogami, nije načitao.
