Trideset i petu obljetnicu kultnog filma osamdesetih "Vatra svetog Elma" ("St. Elmo‘s Fire", 1985.) režiser Joel Schumacher nije uspio doživjeti. Umro je svega šest dana ranije. Da je Schumacher poživio duže, proslava godišnjice "Vatre svetog Elma" bila bi za njega zasigurno ganutljivo iskustvo. Podsjetimo, "St. Elmo‘s Fire" je bio Schumacherov treći film nakon "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" i "D.C. Cab", ali prvi s kojim je skrenuo pažnju na sebe i svoje autorske senzibilitete, sve što ga je načinilo redateljem kakvog znamo.

Prije nego je otkrio Jasona Patrica ("Izgubljeni dječaci") i Colina Farrella ("Zemlja tigrova") te ustoličio Juliju Roberts kao zvijezdu devedesetih ("Tanka linija smrti", "Umrijeti mlad"), Schumacher je proslavio mlade glumce poput Emilija Esteveza, Demi Moore, Roba Lowea, Ally Sheedy, Andrewa McCarthyja i Judda Nelsona koji su etiketirani kao "brat pack" nakon što su se neki od njih pojavljivali u sličnim dramama o odrastanju (npr. "The Breakfast Club", također iz 1985.).

Za glumce je "Vatra svetog Elma" bila jednaka prijelomnica kao i za redatelja. Fokusiran na grupu prijatelja poslije završetka fakulteta, film je zapečatio (izgubljenu) mladost kao provodnu temu prvog dijela Schumacherove karijere, negdje do "Dana ludila" i "Osam milimetara".

Bez "St. Elmo‘s Fire" tko zna bi li bilo "The Lost Boys" i "Flatliners". Patric u "Izgubljenim dječacima" čak i njeguje sličan imidž kao Lowe u "Vatri svetog Elma" (fudbalerka, naušnica) i svira saksofon jednako posvećeno poput onog nabildanog tipa iz uvoda idućeg Schumacherova filma.

Loweov lik Billy svodi redateljeve autorske težnje, najviše u refleksivnoj sceni razgovora s Wendy (Mare Winningham) na krovu kuće. Billy je bio faca na faksu, zasigurno i u srednjoj školi, a sada je, kao i ostali, izgubljen u prijevodu života odraslih ("Ljubav, brak, djeca, veze, sve je to ludo"), gubi posao za poslom i ne snalazi se u ulozi supruga i oca.

"Nedostaje mi faks. Sve je tad bilo izvan kontrole. U svakodnevnom životu nema šanse da se to dogodi. Razmišljaš li ikad o tome?", upita on Wendy koja mu se sviđa jednako kao i Jules (Moore). Zanimljiv je i razgovor Billyja i Jules, kad on prizna da je izgubio 20 poslova nakon diplomiranja, da gubi ženu i dijete, a možda i kosu.

"Tako sam umorna, Billy. Nisam nikad mislila da ću biti umorna s 22 godine. Više uopće ne znam tko bi trebala biti", kasnije uzvrati prezaposlena djevojka Jules. Život je lakši kad si mlad, stoga Billy i ekipa dvadeset-i-nešto-godišnjaka nastoji održavati plamen vječne mladosti upaljenim, bilo da se (u njegovom slučaju) okreće vožnji u pijanom stanju ili piću i tučnjavi u lokalnom baru "St. Elmo", odbijajući odrasti i evocirajući period kad je "sve bilo izvan kontrole", kad se osjećao živim.

"Kad ćeš odrasti?", pitaju Billyja. Vječnu mladost tražili su i mladi likovi u "The Lost Boys", bili spremni postati vampiri da je pronađu, a osjećaju kad je "sve izvan kontrole" vjerojatno teži i Bruce Wayne, oblačeći se u Čovjeka-šišmiša u "Batmanu zauvijek" i "Batmanu i Robinu". Napokon, naslov filma "Dying Young" u ovom kontekstu djeluje simboličan, kao da je bolje umrijeti mlad nego živjeti u svijetu odraslih, onako kao što je "bolje biti pijan nego star".

U nekoliko navrata Schumacher je sugerirao svoje neonske vizualne i dekoraterske preferencije iz kasnijih filmova (svjetlucavi mural Billyja Idola, pink dekor na zidovima soba, ružičasta haljina i ruž za usne), ali "St. Elmo‘s Fire" nije režirao spotovski, već se ponajprije fokusirao na priču i likove.

S likovima i nihovim traženjima lako se poistovjetiti, osim s Kirbyjem (Estevez) i njegovom opsjednutošću s Dale (Andie MacDowell) koja na momente odlazi predaleko i danas bi sigurno završila na podu montažne sobe. Autor ovih redaka imao je svega šest godina kad je "Vatra svetog Elma" zapalila kina, a danas brodi kroz četrdesete, no može shvatiti zašto je ciljanoj demografskoj skupini ugrijala srce u realnom vremenu i nastavila to raditi u nadolazećim godinama.

Filmovi obično završavaju scenom maturiranja ili diplomiranja likova, a "St. Elmo‘s Fire" kreće odatle, prikazujući u uvodu protagoniste u prepoznatljivoj "graduation" odori s kapicama kako kroče naprijed u nesigurnu budućnost. Može se reći da "Vatra svetog Elma" popunjava prostor između četiri generacijska klasika osamdesetih o vječnom odrastanju, "Ostani uz mene", "Slobodnog dana Ferrisa Buellera" i "Kluba ranoranilaca" te "Velike jeze".

Likovi su prekjučer bili klinci i srednjoškolci, jučer studenti, sutra će biti trideset-i-nešto-godišnjaci i dalje u krugu života čiji smisao propituju. "Volio bih napisati nešto o smislu života", kaže Kevin (McCarthy), zaljubljen u Alecovu (Nelson) curu Leslie (Sheedy), a slaže se da je "ljubav pušiona", kako smatra Kirby koji se, pak, drži filozofije "Postoji nekoliko suštinskih trenutaka u životu muškarca: gubitak nevinosti, vjenčanje, očinstvo i osmijeh prave djevojke".

Tako nešto uvijek može rezonirati s gledateljem ako je iskusio i još iskušava potragu za ljubavi, poslom, identitetom, stabilnosti i, konačno, smislom života koja ne staje s dvadesetima. Protagonisti filma se nalaze u toj potrazi i nastoje zadržati to što pronađu, dokučiti tko su i (za) što su, kao i sačuvati prijateljstvo kojemu Schumacher pridaje veliku pažnju i ono ustvari predstavlja forte priče.

"Mislio sam da ćemo zauvijek biti prijatelji", veli Kirby u drami o ekipi frendova koji odrastaju i potajice strahuju od toga da ne dođu do točke kad se prijatelji rastaju. Glumci uspješno dočaravaju zajedničku prošlost likova, njihove odnose i stare rane ("Bio sam u nju ludo zaljubljen kad smo bili brucoši", "Kako to da mi nisi nikad uletio?") dok žive u kaotičnoj sadašnjosti i pokušavaju posložiti kockice budućnosti.

Kaotičnost se povremeno seli u sam film i "St. Elmo‘s Fire" nije bezgrešan i ujednačen kao što su to, primjerice, "Stand By Me" i "The Big Chill". No, takav je i život u dvadesetima i općenito koji je Schumacher preslikao. "Vatra svetog Elma" se zato nikada neće ugasiti.

Široj publici manje poznati Andrew McCarthy je osamdesetih glumio i u "Pretty In Pink" i "Vikendu s mrtvacem", Mare Winningham u "Turneru i Hoochu", a Ally Sheedy u "Kratkom spoju".

Trideset i petu obljetnicu kultnog filma osamdesetih "Vatra svetog Elma" ("St. Elmo‘s Fire", 1985.) režiser Joel Schumacher nije uspio doživjeti. Umro je svega šest dana ranije. Da je Schumacher poživio duže, proslava godišnjice "Vatre svetog Elma" bila bi za njega zasigurno ganutljivo iskustvo. Podsjetimo, "St. Elmo‘s Fire" je bio Schumacherov treći film nakon "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" i "D.C. Cab", ali prvi s kojim je skrenuo pažnju na sebe i svoje autorske senzibilitete, sve što ga je načinilo redateljem kakvog znamo.

Prije nego je otkrio Jasona Patrica ("Izgubljeni dječaci") i Colina Farrella ("Zemlja tigrova") te ustoličio Juliju Roberts kao zvijezdu devedesetih ("Tanka linija smrti", "Umrijeti mlad"), Schumacher je proslavio mlade glumce poput Emilija Esteveza, Demi Moore, Roba Lowea, Ally Sheedy, Andrewa McCarthyja i Judda Nelsona koji su etiketirani kao "brat pack" nakon što su se neki od njih pojavljivali u sličnim dramama o odrastanju (npr. "The Breakfast Club", također iz 1985.).

Za glumce je "Vatra svetog Elma" bila jednaka prijelomnica kao i za redatelja. Fokusiran na grupu prijatelja poslije završetka fakulteta, film je zapečatio (izgubljenu) mladost kao provodnu temu prvog dijela Schumacherove karijere, negdje do "Dana ludila" i "Osam milimetara".

Bez "St. Elmo‘s Fire" tko zna bi li bilo "The Lost Boys" i "Flatliners". Patric u "Izgubljenim dječacima" čak i njeguje sličan imidž kao Lowe u "Vatri svetog Elma" (fudbalerka, naušnica) i svira saksofon jednako posvećeno poput onog nabildanog tipa iz uvoda idućeg Schumacherova filma.

Loweov lik Billy svodi redateljeve autorske težnje, najviše u refleksivnoj sceni razgovora s Wendy (Mare Winningham) na krovu kuće. Billy je bio faca na faksu, zasigurno i u srednjoj školi, a sada je, kao i ostali, izgubljen u prijevodu života odraslih ("Ljubav, brak, djeca, veze, sve je to ludo"), gubi posao za poslom i ne snalazi se u ulozi supruga i oca.

"Nedostaje mi faks. Sve je tad bilo izvan kontrole. U svakodnevnom životu nema šanse da se to dogodi. Razmišljaš li ikad o tome?", upita on Wendy koja mu se sviđa jednako kao i Jules (Moore). Zanimljiv je i razgovor Billyja i Jules, kad on prizna da je izgubio 20 poslova nakon diplomiranja, da gubi ženu i dijete, a možda i kosu.

"Tako sam umorna, Billy. Nisam nikad mislila da ću biti umorna s 22 godine. Više uopće ne znam tko bi trebala biti", kasnije uzvrati prezaposlena djevojka Jules. Život je lakši kad si mlad, stoga Billy i ekipa dvadeset-i-nešto-godišnjaka nastoji održavati plamen vječne mladosti upaljenim, bilo da se (u njegovom slučaju) okreće vožnji u pijanom stanju ili piću i tučnjavi u lokalnom baru "St. Elmo", odbijajući odrasti i evocirajući period kad je "sve bilo izvan kontrole", kad se osjećao živim.

"Kad ćeš odrasti?", pitaju Billyja. Vječnu mladost tražili su i mladi likovi u "The Lost Boys", bili spremni postati vampiri da je pronađu, a osjećaju kad je "sve izvan kontrole" vjerojatno teži i Bruce Wayne, oblačeći se u Čovjeka-šišmiša u "Batmanu zauvijek" i "Batmanu i Robinu". Napokon, naslov filma "Dying Young" u ovom kontekstu djeluje simboličan, kao da je bolje umrijeti mlad nego živjeti u svijetu odraslih, onako kao što je "bolje biti pijan nego star".

U nekoliko navrata Schumacher je sugerirao svoje neonske vizualne i dekoraterske preferencije iz kasnijih filmova (svjetlucavi mural Billyja Idola, pink dekor na zidovima soba, ružičasta haljina i ruž za usne), ali "St. Elmo‘s Fire" nije režirao spotovski, već se ponajprije fokusirao na priču i likove.

S likovima i nihovim traženjima lako se poistovjetiti, osim s Kirbyjem (Estevez) i njegovom opsjednutošću s Dale (Andie MacDowell) koja na momente odlazi predaleko i danas bi sigurno završila na podu montažne sobe. Autor ovih redaka imao je svega šest godina kad je "Vatra svetog Elma" zapalila kina, a danas brodi kroz četrdesete, no može shvatiti zašto je ciljanoj demografskoj skupini ugrijala srce u realnom vremenu i nastavila to raditi u nadolazećim godinama.

Filmovi obično završavaju scenom maturiranja ili diplomiranja likova, a "St. Elmo‘s Fire" kreće odatle, prikazujući u uvodu protagoniste u prepoznatljivoj "graduation" odori s kapicama kako kroče naprijed u nesigurnu budućnost. Može se reći da "Vatra svetog Elma" popunjava prostor između četiri generacijska klasika osamdesetih o vječnom odrastanju, "Ostani uz mene", "Slobodnog dana Ferrisa Buellera" i "Kluba ranoranilaca" te "Velike jeze".

Likovi su prekjučer bili klinci i srednjoškolci, jučer studenti, sutra će biti trideset-i-nešto-godišnjaci i dalje u krugu života čiji smisao propituju. "Volio bih napisati nešto o smislu života", kaže Kevin (McCarthy), zaljubljen u Alecovu (Nelson) curu Leslie (Sheedy), a slaže se da je "ljubav pušiona", kako smatra Kirby koji se, pak, drži filozofije "Postoji nekoliko suštinskih trenutaka u životu muškarca: gubitak nevinosti, vjenčanje, očinstvo i osmijeh prave djevojke".

Tako nešto uvijek može rezonirati s gledateljem ako je iskusio i još iskušava potragu za ljubavi, poslom, identitetom, stabilnosti i, konačno, smislom života koja ne staje s dvadesetima. Protagonisti filma se nalaze u toj potrazi i nastoje zadržati to što pronađu, dokučiti tko su i (za) što su, kao i sačuvati prijateljstvo kojemu Schumacher pridaje veliku pažnju i ono ustvari predstavlja forte priče.

"Mislio sam da ćemo zauvijek biti prijatelji", veli Kirby u drami o ekipi frendova koji odrastaju i potajice strahuju od toga da ne dođu do točke kad se prijatelji rastaju. Glumci uspješno dočaravaju zajedničku prošlost likova, njihove odnose i stare rane ("Bio sam u nju ludo zaljubljen kad smo bili brucoši", "Kako to da mi nisi nikad uletio?") dok žive u kaotičnoj sadašnjosti i pokušavaju posložiti kockice budućnosti.

Kaotičnost se povremeno seli u sam film i "St. Elmo‘s Fire" nije bezgrešan i ujednačen kao što su to, primjerice, "Stand By Me" i "The Big Chill". No, takav je i život u dvadesetima i općenito koji je Schumacher preslikao. "Vatra svetog Elma" se zato nikada neće ugasiti.

Široj publici manje poznati Andrew McCarthy je osamdesetih glumio i u "Pretty In Pink" i "Vikendu s mrtvacem", Mare Winningham u "Turneru i Hoochu", a Ally Sheedy u "Kratkom spoju".
