Iza kamere Sean Penn je zakoračio početkom devedesetih, kad je već bio afirmiran kao dobar glumac ("Boje nasilja", "Stanje milosti", "Žrtve rata"), spreman za velike uloge i Oscare ("Carlitov način", "Odlazak u smrt", "Mistična rijeka"...). S filmovima "Zla krv", "Čuvar prijelaza", "Zakletva" i "U divljini", snimljenim od 1991. do 2007., Penn se pokazao i kao dobar redatelj.

Svaki idući film bio mu je bolji od prethodnoga. Međutim, prevelika pauza do novog projekta "The Last Face", 2016., nije išla Pennu na redateljsku ruku i činilo se da je izgubio dar za režiju, premda ne baš toliko da bude ismijan u Cannesu i postane predmet sprdnje. Poslije tog debakla, Penn nije režirao pet godina, a i rijetko je glumio ("Profesor i luđak"), da bi se vratio 2021. kao glumac i redatelj s "Danom zastave" koji je isto imao premijeru u Cannesu, ali sa znatno povoljnijom recepcijom.

Premijerno u Hrvatskoj prikazan na ovogodišnjem Vukovarskom festivalu, "Flag Day" je korak naprijed za Penna nakon "The Last Face", iako nije na razini "The Indian Runner", "The Crossing Guard", "The Pledge" i "Into The Wild", a povremeno i odašilje vibre pretencioznog "vanity" projekta, snimljenog da otac omogući kćerki glumački proboj i pretvori je u hollywoodsku zvijezdu.

U pitanju je film snimljen "na temelju istinite priče", inspiriran knjigom "Flim-Flam Man: The True Story Of My Father's Counterfeit Life" Jennifer Vogel posvećenom njezinom ocu Johnu, zloglasnom krivotvoritelju. Penn je ulogu Johna Vogela dao samome sebi i ovo je njegov prvi redateljski film u kojem i glumi.

Uvodna scena vraća nas u lipanj 1992., kad Jennifer (uglavnom solidna Dylan Penn, Seanova kćerka) doznaje da je njezin otac oprao 50.000 dolara i tiskao 22 milijuna, te da mu je prijetila zatvorska kazna od 75 godina, sve to montažno ispresijecano s policijskom potjerom za njim.

Priča o Vogelu nudila je štofa za kriminalističku dramu, no Penna to nije zanimalo. On je priču ispričao kao obiteljsku dramu o odnosu oca i kćerke, sagledanu očima Jennifer koju, uz Penn, glume i Addison Tymec (dijete) i Jadyn Rylee (pred-tinejdžerica).

Naracija se vraća u njezino djetinjstvo od 1975. nadalje, kad je tata bio "prolazni lik u našim životima", ali se svejedno uspio djeci zavući u srce i, recimo, prenijeti im ljubav prema Chopinu i klasičnoj glazbi. "Posebni trenuci djetinjstva su poput bajke. Uz njega sam se osjećala dijelom većeg svijeta o kojem sam mogla samo sanjati", pripovijeda Jennifer.

Tu je jasno da se Penn ugleda na poetiku Terrencea Malicka (režirao glumca u "Tankoj crvenoj liniji") i "Božanstvenih dana" iz 1978., samo što je njegova redateljska ruka malo teža u kombiniranju poetične "voiceover" naracije i scenografske poezije s kadrovima prostranih polja i zlatnim zalascima sunca. Jenniferino djetinjstvo, ipak, nije bilo lako u disfunkcionalnoj familiji, s ocem koji je prevarant i patološki lažov, te neodgovornom majkom (Katheryn Winnick) sklonom čašici.

"Njegov rođendan je 14. lipnja, ne vjeruj gadovima rođenima na Dan zastave", čujemo za Johna, pri čemu za politički vječto aktivni Penn preko njegova lika kao da želi nešto reći i o Americi koja stvara muljatore poput Vogela, omotane "stars and stripes" barjakom. Međutim, srce filma je, rekosmo, odnos oca i kćeri koja je prisiljena sama sebe odgojiti nakon što otkrije da na roditelje baš i ne može računati, posebice kad se mamin novi dečko (Norbert Leo Butz) ušulja u njezinu sobu i pokuša je napastvovati.

Odnos je povremeno sveden na zbroj općih mjesta obiteljske drame, ali drukčijim ga čini lik Johna, nepopravljivog prevaranta koji će lažima slomiti kćerkino srce, uključujući scenu kad glumi da razgovara na telefon s čovjekom da joj kupi automobil, a s druge strane slušalice nema nikoga, znači pretvarao se da uopće vodi razgovor, kamoli da joj zapravo kupuje auto.

Plus jest da odnos djeluje autentično budući da se pred kamerom nalaze otac i kćer iz stvarnog života. Pritom, Penn kao da povlači paralele između lika i sebe samoga kao odsutnog oca i glumca koji je po "defaultu" također svojevrsni krivotvoritelj i krivotvori stvarnost pretvarajući se da je netko drugi na granici istine i laži. "Dan zastave" razvija američku zastavu osobne apologije.

Dylan Penn je primila nagradu Rising Star na festivalu u Deauvilleu, a u filmu glumi i Seanov sin Hopper Jack Penn. Sean se pojavio i u "Licorice Pizzi". "Flag Day" je nedugo nakon premijere na Vukovarskom festivalu prikazan na Cinemaxu, gdje bi se mogao i nastaviti emitirati.

Iza kamere Sean Penn je zakoračio početkom devedesetih, kad je već bio afirmiran kao dobar glumac ("Boje nasilja", "Stanje milosti", "Žrtve rata"), spreman za velike uloge i Oscare ("Carlitov način", "Odlazak u smrt", "Mistična rijeka"...). S filmovima "Zla krv", "Čuvar prijelaza", "Zakletva" i "U divljini", snimljenim od 1991. do 2007., Penn se pokazao i kao dobar redatelj.

Svaki idući film bio mu je bolji od prethodnoga. Međutim, prevelika pauza do novog projekta "The Last Face", 2016., nije išla Pennu na redateljsku ruku i činilo se da je izgubio dar za režiju, premda ne baš toliko da bude ismijan u Cannesu i postane predmet sprdnje. Poslije tog debakla, Penn nije režirao pet godina, a i rijetko je glumio ("Profesor i luđak"), da bi se vratio 2021. kao glumac i redatelj s "Danom zastave" koji je isto imao premijeru u Cannesu, ali sa znatno povoljnijom recepcijom.

Premijerno u Hrvatskoj prikazan na ovogodišnjem Vukovarskom festivalu, "Flag Day" je korak naprijed za Penna nakon "The Last Face", iako nije na razini "The Indian Runner", "The Crossing Guard", "The Pledge" i "Into The Wild", a povremeno i odašilje vibre pretencioznog "vanity" projekta, snimljenog da otac omogući kćerki glumački proboj i pretvori je u hollywoodsku zvijezdu.

U pitanju je film snimljen "na temelju istinite priče", inspiriran knjigom "Flim-Flam Man: The True Story Of My Father's Counterfeit Life" Jennifer Vogel posvećenom njezinom ocu Johnu, zloglasnom krivotvoritelju. Penn je ulogu Johna Vogela dao samome sebi i ovo je njegov prvi redateljski film u kojem i glumi.

Uvodna scena vraća nas u lipanj 1992., kad Jennifer (uglavnom solidna Dylan Penn, Seanova kćerka) doznaje da je njezin otac oprao 50.000 dolara i tiskao 22 milijuna, te da mu je prijetila zatvorska kazna od 75 godina, sve to montažno ispresijecano s policijskom potjerom za njim.

Priča o Vogelu nudila je štofa za kriminalističku dramu, no Penna to nije zanimalo. On je priču ispričao kao obiteljsku dramu o odnosu oca i kćerke, sagledanu očima Jennifer koju, uz Penn, glume i Addison Tymec (dijete) i Jadyn Rylee (pred-tinejdžerica).

Naracija se vraća u njezino djetinjstvo od 1975. nadalje, kad je tata bio "prolazni lik u našim životima", ali se svejedno uspio djeci zavući u srce i, recimo, prenijeti im ljubav prema Chopinu i klasičnoj glazbi. "Posebni trenuci djetinjstva su poput bajke. Uz njega sam se osjećala dijelom većeg svijeta o kojem sam mogla samo sanjati", pripovijeda Jennifer.

Tu je jasno da se Penn ugleda na poetiku Terrencea Malicka (režirao glumca u "Tankoj crvenoj liniji") i "Božanstvenih dana" iz 1978., samo što je njegova redateljska ruka malo teža u kombiniranju poetične "voiceover" naracije i scenografske poezije s kadrovima prostranih polja i zlatnim zalascima sunca. Jenniferino djetinjstvo, ipak, nije bilo lako u disfunkcionalnoj familiji, s ocem koji je prevarant i patološki lažov, te neodgovornom majkom (Katheryn Winnick) sklonom čašici.

"Njegov rođendan je 14. lipnja, ne vjeruj gadovima rođenima na Dan zastave", čujemo za Johna, pri čemu za politički vječto aktivni Penn preko njegova lika kao da želi nešto reći i o Americi koja stvara muljatore poput Vogela, omotane "stars and stripes" barjakom. Međutim, srce filma je, rekosmo, odnos oca i kćeri koja je prisiljena sama sebe odgojiti nakon što otkrije da na roditelje baš i ne može računati, posebice kad se mamin novi dečko (Norbert Leo Butz) ušulja u njezinu sobu i pokuša je napastvovati.

Odnos je povremeno sveden na zbroj općih mjesta obiteljske drame, ali drukčijim ga čini lik Johna, nepopravljivog prevaranta koji će lažima slomiti kćerkino srce, uključujući scenu kad glumi da razgovara na telefon s čovjekom da joj kupi automobil, a s druge strane slušalice nema nikoga, znači pretvarao se da uopće vodi razgovor, kamoli da joj zapravo kupuje auto.

Plus jest da odnos djeluje autentično budući da se pred kamerom nalaze otac i kćer iz stvarnog života. Pritom, Penn kao da povlači paralele između lika i sebe samoga kao odsutnog oca i glumca koji je po "defaultu" također svojevrsni krivotvoritelj i krivotvori stvarnost pretvarajući se da je netko drugi na granici istine i laži. "Dan zastave" razvija američku zastavu osobne apologije.

Dylan Penn je primila nagradu Rising Star na festivalu u Deauvilleu, a u filmu glumi i Seanov sin Hopper Jack Penn. Sean se pojavio i u "Licorice Pizzi". "Flag Day" je nedugo nakon premijere na Vukovarskom festivalu prikazan na Cinemaxu, gdje bi se mogao i nastaviti emitirati.
