Donji tok rijeke Neretve zagađuju industrijski pogoni od Čapljine do Konjica, gdje se u rijeku ispuštaju otpadane vode a nije tajna ni da kanalizacija grada Mostara završava upravo u koritu Neretve. Posljednja istraživanja koja je provela Agencija za vodno područje Jadranskog mora iz Mostara zvone na uzbunu jer je u Neretvi kod Konjica pronađena velika količina teških metala, bakra, cinka i nikla čak desetak puta veća od dopuštenih vrijednosti, koje rijeka dalje nosi svojim tokom prema Ušću.

Osim životinjskog svijeta delte Neretve, autohtonih vrsta riba poglavito jegulje i žaba, ugrožene su i stonske kamenice budući voda iz Neretve nakon ulijevanja u more dopire do Malostonskog zaljeva, donoseći tako slatku vodu iznimno važno za razmnožavanje i uzgoj kamenica i mušula.
Ekolozi se slažu da ovakvi rezultati nikako nisu dobri. Posebno je zabrinjavajuće taloženje teških metala u sedimentu korita Neretve, koje je itekako zagađeno zbog ispuštanja otpadnih voda iz okolnih pogona metalne industrije.
Problem je to veći jer se rijetko provode ispitivanja vode iz rijeke Neretve na ostatke teških metala, koji dolaze iz različitih izvora, od pretjerane upotrebe pesticida, industrijskog otpada pa do intenzivnog prometa vozila.
Teške metalče svakodnevno nalazimo u zraku, vodi, tlu, hrani, ali ako se nalaze u dopuštenim granicama ne utječu negativno na ljudsko zdravlje. Međutim, svako povećanje koncentracije teških metala tlu, vodi i zraku ugrožava zdravlje ljudi poglavito djece, kod koje može uzrokovati teške poremećaje u neurološkom razvoju. Teški metali uzrokuju bolesti pluća i bubrega, genetska oštećenja, smanjuje plodnost te povećavaju rizik od raka a kada jednom dospiju u tlo ili vodu teški metali tu zauvijek ostaju jer ih je nemoguće ukloniti.

Nitrati i fosfati koji dospijevaju u rijeku potiču razvoj invazivnih biljnih vrsta, koje tu nikada prije nisu bile. To je takozvani sindrom obrastanja invazivnim vrstama, od kojih je najgora vodena kuga, koja remeti prirodnu ravnotežu u riječnom koritu jer prekriva alge kojima se hrane ribe te tako uništava hranidbeni lanac. Njezina prirodna staništa su u vodama sjeverne Amerike i Kanade a posljednjih se godina pojavila u Jablaničkom i Uloškom jezeru te se širi i u korito Neretve.

Donji tok rijeke Neretve zagađuju industrijski pogoni od Čapljine do Konjica, gdje se u rijeku ispuštaju otpadane vode a nije tajna ni da kanalizacija grada Mostara završava upravo u koritu Neretve. Posljednja istraživanja koja je provela Agencija za vodno područje Jadranskog mora iz Mostara zvone na uzbunu jer je u Neretvi kod Konjica pronađena velika količina teških metala, bakra, cinka i nikla čak desetak puta veća od dopuštenih vrijednosti, koje rijeka dalje nosi svojim tokom prema Ušću.

Osim životinjskog svijeta delte Neretve, autohtonih vrsta riba poglavito jegulje i žaba, ugrožene su i stonske kamenice budući voda iz Neretve nakon ulijevanja u more dopire do Malostonskog zaljeva, donoseći tako slatku vodu iznimno važno za razmnožavanje i uzgoj kamenica i mušula.
Ekolozi se slažu da ovakvi rezultati nikako nisu dobri. Posebno je zabrinjavajuće taloženje teških metala u sedimentu korita Neretve, koje je itekako zagađeno zbog ispuštanja otpadnih voda iz okolnih pogona metalne industrije.
Problem je to veći jer se rijetko provode ispitivanja vode iz rijeke Neretve na ostatke teških metala, koji dolaze iz različitih izvora, od pretjerane upotrebe pesticida, industrijskog otpada pa do intenzivnog prometa vozila.
Teške metalče svakodnevno nalazimo u zraku, vodi, tlu, hrani, ali ako se nalaze u dopuštenim granicama ne utječu negativno na ljudsko zdravlje. Međutim, svako povećanje koncentracije teških metala tlu, vodi i zraku ugrožava zdravlje ljudi poglavito djece, kod koje može uzrokovati teške poremećaje u neurološkom razvoju. Teški metali uzrokuju bolesti pluća i bubrega, genetska oštećenja, smanjuje plodnost te povećavaju rizik od raka a kada jednom dospiju u tlo ili vodu teški metali tu zauvijek ostaju jer ih je nemoguće ukloniti.

Nitrati i fosfati koji dospijevaju u rijeku potiču razvoj invazivnih biljnih vrsta, koje tu nikada prije nisu bile. To je takozvani sindrom obrastanja invazivnim vrstama, od kojih je najgora vodena kuga, koja remeti prirodnu ravnotežu u riječnom koritu jer prekriva alge kojima se hrane ribe te tako uništava hranidbeni lanac. Njezina prirodna staništa su u vodama sjeverne Amerike i Kanade a posljednjih se godina pojavila u Jablaničkom i Uloškom jezeru te se širi i u korito Neretve.
