Nova varijanta koronavirusa najznačajnija je dosad, rekla je za BBC izvršna direktorica britanske Agencije za zdravstvenu sigurnost Jenny Harries.
- Ovo je najznačajnija varijanta s kojom smo se dosad susreli i hitno je istraživanje u tijeku kako bi se saznalo više o njegovoj prenosivosti, ozbiljnosti i osjetljivosti na cjepivo - poručila je Harries.
Znanstvenici strahuju da bi varijanta poznata kao B.1.1.529 mogla biti otporna na cjepiva, budući da se znatno razlikuje od Wuhanskog soja. Ona ima tako dug popis mutacija da ju je jedan znanstvenik za britanske medije opisao jednostavno kao "užasnu", dok je drugi rekao da je to najgora varijanta koju su dosad vidjeli.
Znanstvenici istražuju "koje javnozdravstvene akcije mogu ograničiti utjecaj ovoga virusa", a za to vrijeme Velika Britanija strogo ograničava putovanja za Južnu Afriku i pet susjednih zemalja, gdje je ova varijanta identificirana.
Rani su dani i potvrđeni slučajevi još uvijek su uglavnom koncentrirani u jednoj južnoafričkoj provinciji, ali postoje naznake da su se možda proširili dalje.
Cjepiva će "gotovo sigurno" biti manje učinkovita protiv nove varijante koronavirusa, kaže profesor James Naismith, strukturni biolog sa Sveučilišta Oxford.
- Loše su vijesti, ali nije sudnji dan - dodaje on, zaključivši da su cjepiva u globalu još uvijek učinkovita.
Profesor Naismith kaže da mutacije u varijanti sugeriraju da bi se ona mogla brže širiti. No, kaže kako se prenosivost ne može opisati jednostavno kao "ova aminokiselina radi ovo, već je određena načinom na koji su mutacije funkcionirale zajedno.
Ako se varijanta brže proširi, neminovno će stići i u Veliku Britaniju, kaže profesor i zaključuje da će zabrana putovanja odgoditi njezin dolazak možda još nekoliko tjedana.
No, kaže da ne treba očajavati.
- Cjepiva će biti učinkovita, pojavljuju se novi lijekovi na koje mutacija "gotovo sigurno" neće utjecati, a imamo i druge načine kontrole bolesti u bolnicama - poručio je Naismith britanskoj javnosti.

Nova varijanta koronavirusa najznačajnija je dosad, rekla je za BBC izvršna direktorica britanske Agencije za zdravstvenu sigurnost Jenny Harries.
- Ovo je najznačajnija varijanta s kojom smo se dosad susreli i hitno je istraživanje u tijeku kako bi se saznalo više o njegovoj prenosivosti, ozbiljnosti i osjetljivosti na cjepivo - poručila je Harries.
Znanstvenici strahuju da bi varijanta poznata kao B.1.1.529 mogla biti otporna na cjepiva, budući da se znatno razlikuje od Wuhanskog soja. Ona ima tako dug popis mutacija da ju je jedan znanstvenik za britanske medije opisao jednostavno kao "užasnu", dok je drugi rekao da je to najgora varijanta koju su dosad vidjeli.
Znanstvenici istražuju "koje javnozdravstvene akcije mogu ograničiti utjecaj ovoga virusa", a za to vrijeme Velika Britanija strogo ograničava putovanja za Južnu Afriku i pet susjednih zemalja, gdje je ova varijanta identificirana.
Rani su dani i potvrđeni slučajevi još uvijek su uglavnom koncentrirani u jednoj južnoafričkoj provinciji, ali postoje naznake da su se možda proširili dalje.
Cjepiva će "gotovo sigurno" biti manje učinkovita protiv nove varijante koronavirusa, kaže profesor James Naismith, strukturni biolog sa Sveučilišta Oxford.
- Loše su vijesti, ali nije sudnji dan - dodaje on, zaključivši da su cjepiva u globalu još uvijek učinkovita.
Profesor Naismith kaže da mutacije u varijanti sugeriraju da bi se ona mogla brže širiti. No, kaže kako se prenosivost ne može opisati jednostavno kao "ova aminokiselina radi ovo, već je određena načinom na koji su mutacije funkcionirale zajedno.
Ako se varijanta brže proširi, neminovno će stići i u Veliku Britaniju, kaže profesor i zaključuje da će zabrana putovanja odgoditi njezin dolazak možda još nekoliko tjedana.
No, kaže da ne treba očajavati.
