Od svih zapovjednika američke ratne mornarice koji su u Drugom svjetskom ratu izgubili svoj brod, jedini je Charles McVay, zapovjednik ​USS Indianapolis, izveden pred vojni sud. Na suđenju održanom 1945. godine teretilo ga se da je, ne ploveći u cik-cak liniji kako bi izbjegao podmornička torpeda, kriv za potapanje svoga broda.

Nije mu pomoglo ni svjedočenje Mochitsure Hashimota, kapetana podmornice koja je potopila Indianapolis. Unatoč tome što je Hashimoto pred sudom svjedočio da ni cik-cak plovidba ne bi spasila Indianapolis, McVay je proglašen krivim za gubitak broda i smrt ogromnog broja ljudi; od 1195 članova posade, preživjelo ih je samo 316.

Iako je ostao u američkoj mornarici i do umirovljenja i stekao čin kontraadmirala, McVay više nikad nije dobio priliku da bude zapovjednik nekog američkog ratnog broda. Ubio se u dvorištu ispred svoje kuće u studenom 1968. godine. U jednoj je ruci držao pištolj, a u drugoj figuricu mornara, igračku koju je dobio kao dijete.

Uvjereni da je nepravedno optužen i osuđen, preživjeli s Indianapolisa desetljećima su se trudili skinuti ljagu s imena svoga kapetana i u studenom 2020. Kongres SAD-a posthumno je rehabilitirao Charlesa McVaya. Kapetan Hashimoto, koji je svjedočio u korist svojeg bivšeg neprijatelja čiji je brod potopio, umro je pet dana prije te odluke američkoga Kongresa.

Od svih zapovjednika američke ratne mornarice koji su u Drugom svjetskom ratu izgubili svoj brod, jedini je Charles McVay, zapovjednik ​USS Indianapolis, izveden pred vojni sud. Na suđenju održanom 1945. godine teretilo ga se da je, ne ploveći u cik-cak liniji kako bi izbjegao podmornička torpeda, kriv za potapanje svoga broda.

Nije mu pomoglo ni svjedočenje Mochitsure Hashimota, kapetana podmornice koja je potopila Indianapolis. Unatoč tome što je Hashimoto pred sudom svjedočio da ni cik-cak plovidba ne bi spasila Indianapolis, McVay je proglašen krivim za gubitak broda i smrt ogromnog broja ljudi; od 1195 članova posade, preživjelo ih je samo 316.

Iako je ostao u američkoj mornarici i do umirovljenja i stekao čin kontraadmirala, McVay više nikad nije dobio priliku da bude zapovjednik nekog američkog ratnog broda. Ubio se u dvorištu ispred svoje kuće u studenom 1968. godine. U jednoj je ruci držao pištolj, a u drugoj figuricu mornara, igračku koju je dobio kao dijete.

Uvjereni da je nepravedno optužen i osuđen, preživjeli s Indianapolisa desetljećima su se trudili skinuti ljagu s imena svoga kapetana i u studenom 2020. Kongres SAD-a posthumno je rehabilitirao Charlesa McVaya. Kapetan Hashimoto, koji je svjedočio u korist svojeg bivšeg neprijatelja čiji je brod potopio, umro je pet dana prije te odluke američkoga Kongresa.

Charles McVayTragična priča o američkom kapetanu koji je optužen za potapanje svoga broda i smrt tisuću ljudi

Od svih zapovjednika američke ratne mornarice koji su u Drugom svjetskom ratu izgubili svoj brod, jedini je Charles McVay, zapovjednik ​USS Indianapolis, izveden pred vojni sud. Na suđenju održanom 1945. godine teretilo ga se da je, ne ploveći u cik-cak liniji kako bi izbjegao podmornička torpeda, kriv za potapanje svoga broda.

Nije mu pomoglo ni svjedočenje Mochitsure Hashimota, kapetana podmornice koja je potopila Indianapolis. Unatoč tome što je Hashimoto pred sudom svjedočio da ni cik-cak plovidba ne bi spasila Indianapolis, McVay je proglašen krivim za gubitak broda i smrt ogromnog broja ljudi; od 1195 članova posade, preživjelo ih je samo 316.

Iako je ostao u američkoj mornarici i do umirovljenja i stekao čin kontraadmirala, McVay više nikad nije dobio priliku da bude zapovjednik nekog američkog ratnog broda. Ubio se u dvorištu ispred svoje kuće u studenom 1968. godine. U jednoj je ruci držao pištolj, a u drugoj figuricu mornara, igračku koju je dobio kao dijete.

Uvjereni da je nepravedno optužen i osuđen, preživjeli s Indianapolisa desetljećima su se trudili skinuti ljagu s imena svoga kapetana i u studenom 2020. Kongres SAD-a posthumno je rehabilitirao Charlesa McVaya. Kapetan Hashimoto, koji je svjedočio u korist svojeg bivšeg neprijatelja čiji je brod potopio, umro je pet dana prije te odluke američkoga Kongresa.
