Ogromni ledenjak koji je plutao Južnim Atlantikom raspao se u nekoliko komada oko tri i pol godine nakon nastanka, objavila je Europska svemirska agencija ESA koja prati kretanje diva uz pomoć satelita.

Taj je ledenjak bio na putu za udaljeni otok South Georgia, kojemu se ledenjak nazvan A-68A približavao prošle godine predstavljajući prijetnju ekosustavu britanskog prekomorskog teritorija, navela je ESA u priopćenju u srijedu.

A-68A je već promijenio smjer i izgubio više dijelova u prosincu, no bilo je nejasno gdje će završiti.

Prema ESA-i, prošlog su tjedna na ledenjaku otkrivene nove velike pukotine i potom se raspao u "male ledenjake".

"Glavni A-68A ledenjak čini se da se kreće prema jugu i trenutno je oko 225 kilometara od otoka South Georgia", navodi se u priopćenju i dodaje da se čini da se manji ledenjaci udaljavaju od glavnog te da se udaljavaju i međusobno.

Približavanje ledenjaka tom udaljenom otoku izazvalo je strahovanja da bi se mogao zaglaviti na obali i da bi njegova hladna slatka voda mogla utjecati na krhki ekosustav otoka.

Znanstvenike je posebno brinula sudbina pingvina na otoku.

Ledenjak se odvojio od ledene ploče Larsen-C na istočnoj obali Antarktičkog poluotoka u srpnju 2017.

Smatran je jednim od najvećih poznatih ledenjaka u novijoj povijesti prije nego što je izgubio nekoliko svojih dijelova proteklih godina.

Ogromni ledenjak koji je plutao Južnim Atlantikom raspao se u nekoliko komada oko tri i pol godine nakon nastanka, objavila je Europska svemirska agencija ESA koja prati kretanje diva uz pomoć satelita.

Taj je ledenjak bio na putu za udaljeni otok South Georgia, kojemu se ledenjak nazvan A-68A približavao prošle godine predstavljajući prijetnju ekosustavu britanskog prekomorskog teritorija, navela je ESA u priopćenju u srijedu.

A-68A je već promijenio smjer i izgubio više dijelova u prosincu, no bilo je nejasno gdje će završiti.

Prema ESA-i, prošlog su tjedna na ledenjaku otkrivene nove velike pukotine i potom se raspao u "male ledenjake".

"Glavni A-68A ledenjak čini se da se kreće prema jugu i trenutno je oko 225 kilometara od otoka South Georgia", navodi se u priopćenju i dodaje da se čini da se manji ledenjaci udaljavaju od glavnog te da se udaljavaju i međusobno.

Približavanje ledenjaka tom udaljenom otoku izazvalo je strahovanja da bi se mogao zaglaviti na obali i da bi njegova hladna slatka voda mogla utjecati na krhki ekosustav otoka.

Znanstvenike je posebno brinula sudbina pingvina na otoku.

Ledenjak se odvojio od ledene ploče Larsen-C na istočnoj obali Antarktičkog poluotoka u srpnju 2017.

Smatran je jednim od najvećih poznatih ledenjaka u novijoj povijesti prije nego što je izgubio nekoliko svojih dijelova proteklih godina.

Ogromni ledenjak koji je plutao Južnim Atlantikom raspao se u nekoliko komada oko tri i pol godine nakon nastanka, objavila je Europska svemirska agencija ESA koja prati kretanje diva uz pomoć satelita.

Taj je ledenjak bio na putu za udaljeni otok South Georgia, kojemu se ledenjak nazvan A-68A približavao prošle godine predstavljajući prijetnju ekosustavu britanskog prekomorskog teritorija, navela je ESA u priopćenju u srijedu.

A-68A je već promijenio smjer i izgubio više dijelova u prosincu, no bilo je nejasno gdje će završiti.

Prema ESA-i, prošlog su tjedna na ledenjaku otkrivene nove velike pukotine i potom se raspao u "male ledenjake".

"Glavni A-68A ledenjak čini se da se kreće prema jugu i trenutno je oko 225 kilometara od otoka South Georgia", navodi se u priopćenju i dodaje da se čini da se manji ledenjaci udaljavaju od glavnog te da se udaljavaju i međusobno.

Približavanje ledenjaka tom udaljenom otoku izazvalo je strahovanja da bi se mogao zaglaviti na obali i da bi njegova hladna slatka voda mogla utjecati na krhki ekosustav otoka.

Znanstvenike je posebno brinula sudbina pingvina na otoku.

Ledenjak se odvojio od ledene ploče Larsen-C na istočnoj obali Antarktičkog poluotoka u srpnju 2017.

Smatran je jednim od najvećih poznatih ledenjaka u novijoj povijesti prije nego što je izgubio nekoliko svojih dijelova proteklih godina.
